TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani highlighted the importance of efforts to resolve problems facing the Rohingya Muslims living in Bangladesh refugee camps and said the Islamic Republic is ready to help the South Asian country in this regard.
Speaking at a meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the margins of the 18th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in the Azeri capital of Baku on Friday night, Rouhani pointed to the plight of Rohingya people and said Iran is ready to help Bangladesh resolve the crisis.
Dhaka has been increasingly frustrated with the stateless minority in Bangladesh since the collapse of a recent repatriation attempt to Myanmar, and have enacted several measures making life harder for the refugees.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Rouhani described Bangladesh as a major Islamic country and a friendly nation and praised age-old historical and cultural commonalities of the two countries.
“We are interested in expanding bilateral, regional and international relations between Tehran and Dhaka,” he noted.
Sheikh Hasina, for her part, described unity as the key to the success of Islamic countries and said Muslim countries will become a great power when they unite.
Heading a high-ranking delegation, Rouhani arrived in Baku to address the 18th NAM Summit, which kicked off on Friday in the Azeri capital, and explain the Islamic Republic’s positions on important regional and international issues.
The preparatory senior officials meeting of the NAM summit was held on October 21-22 and the two-day preparatory ministerial meeting was held on Wednesday and Thursday.
Host Azerbaijan took over the chairmanship of the NAM for the next three years at the Baku Summit.
