The Indian premier wishes for a joint celebration of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured of New Delhi’s continued cooperation to resolve the protracted Rohingya crisis in Bangladesh, when President M Abdul Hamid met him at Hyderabad House.
“We think Rohingya issue should be resolved on an urgent basis. We always speak about this in different international forums,” Modi told the Bangladesh president during the meeting on Friday, reports BSS.
Later, President’s Press Secretary M Joynal Abedin briefed reporters on the meeting.
The Indian prime minister said the Rohingya issue is not just a problem for Bangladesh alone, but a serious threat to the whole of South Asia.
Referring to longstanding and friendly bilateral relations between the two countries, Modi said India and its people will always stand beside Bangladesh.
The Indian premier also wished for a joint celebration of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence and observance of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
“It will have a positive impact on multilateral relations as well,” Modi said.
During the meeting, President Abdul Hamid told the Indian prime minister that the people of Bangladesh have long been waiting for settlement of the Teesta water sharing issue.
India also wants to resolve the pending issue, Modi said, urging the need for activating the joint river commission in this regard.
The Indian prime minister further mentioned that the partnership between Bangladesh and India was flourishing under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
The president expressed his satisfaction with the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries, saying that the ties have grown and prospered, especially under the statesmanship of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali, and secretaries to the President were also present at the meeting.
President Abdul Hamid arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday, on a three-day visit to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Indian premier held on Thursday evening.
