A Congressman of the United
States has proposed bringing Rakhine state of Myanmar under the
Bangladesh territory, arguing that Naypyidaw has failed to protect its
nationals in that area.Bradley James Sherman made the proposal in the
Congress during a hearing on the budget for South Asia on June 13,
urging the US State Department to consider the matter.
Referring
to the US supporting the split of South Sudan from Sudan, he asked why
the government will not take similar step about Myanmar for the
protection of the civil rights of Rohingya people in Rakhine.Sherman,
the chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific of the Congress,
described as genocide the atrocities Myanmar forces had unleashed
against the Rohingyas, the Muslim minority in the predominately Buddhist
country.
Hundreds
of thousands of Rohingya people fled to Cox's Bazar district of
Bangladesh to escape atrocities that the international community,
including the United Nations, has termed crimes against humanity.Sherman
said it is logical to include Rakhine in Bangladesh territory as the
country has taken the responsibility of the people there whereas Myanmar
failed to protect them, according to a report of a national daily
published from Dhaka.
Diplomats
of the Trump administration neither support nor reject the
proposal.Myanmar does not recognize the Rohingyas as their citizens
despite a long history of their presence in the country. The lack of the
recognition has left Rohingyas to be the world's largest stateless
population.
About
1 million of them are in Bangladesh, hundreds of thousands remain in
Myanmar and others are scattered throughout Asia. Myanmar agreed to take
back its nationals from Bangladesh after verification of their
identities amid repeated calls from Bangladesh and pressure from the
international community.
Naypyidaw
took back several hundreds of Rohingya people from Bangladesh but the
process stopped due to its lack of interest in carrying on the process.
