Take back Aung San Suu Kyi’s Nobel Peace Prize

As the top civilian leader of Burma, a k a Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi has worked so hard at un-earning her Nobel Peace Prize, it’s time the committee takes it back.

After all, peace doesn’t look like actively keeping two just-released journalists imprisoned unjustly. As a former political prisoner herself, she should know something about this.

Yet while the opposition, the international community and their employer all worked to free Reuters reporters U Wa Lone and U Kyaw Soe Oo, Suu Kyi worked to keep them locked up, The New York Times reports.

The reporters were arrested in December 2017 on charges of violating the colonial-era Officials Secrets Act — after two undercover cops handed them some rolled-up papers, supposedly holding classified info.

Before they were even convicted, Suu Kyi told Japanese TV they’d broken the law. Afterward, she insisted they exhaust their appeals before she’d consider intervening, despite the evidence that they’d been entrapped.

All along, their real “crime” was their coverage of the regime’s bloody pogroms against the minority Rohingya. Aung San Suu Kyi stood idly by while hundreds of thousands of people were driven out of the country, with thousands murdered. You can see why the former advocate for freedom wanted the reporters to stay where they couldn’t write the truth
