Camp in-charge and police were attacked while trying to break up the fight
Two rival groups of Rohingya refugees clashed in the Kutupalong refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.
The incident occurred around 3am on Sunday in camp number six. The camp in-charge and police were attacked by a Rohingya mob while trying to break up the fight.
Kutupalong camp in-charge Rezaul Karim said: “When we went to the camp to bring the situation under control, we were met with hostility and brickbats.
“The police shot a couple of rounds of rubber bullets in order to defend themselves. This caused the mob to scatter, and the offenders tried to make a getaway.
“The authorities have detained 10 Rohingyas from the scene.”
Ukhiya police station Officer-in-Charge (OC), Abul Khair, said: “A case has been filed in this regard. The ten detainees have been sent to Cox’s Bazar court.
“We have increased security in that area and are trying to detain more offenders.”
The ten detainees are Md Ismail, 23, Mahmud Hossain, 30, Md Alam, 18, Mohammad, 29, Bhuttu Alam, 50, Md Rafique, 14, Md Yunus, 18, Rafique, 18, Md Amin, 18, and Khayer Mohammad, 55.
Wishing to remain anonymous, several residents of the camp said a group of refugees affiliated with a Rohingya leader named Md Yunus used to control an abandoned area near the camp.
Three months ago, Yunus was arrested by the police. After that, another group, identifying themselves as the “Ismail group,” claimed the area. After Yunus got out of jail about a month ago, he and his associates tried to gain back control of the area. This caused the two groups to repeatedly clash, which finally resulted in a major conflict.
