Newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das calls on PM Sheikh Hasina at her Sangsad Bhaban office on Sunday, March 10, 2019 PID

Riva Ganguly Das says enhancing regional connectivity will bring economic prosperity for all the countries of the region

Newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das has reaffirmed her country's stance to remain with Bangladesh over the lingering Rohingya issue.

"We are with you over Rohingya issue... This is a huge burden for Bangladesh," she was quoted as saying when she met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office in the parliament complex on Sunday.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, the prime minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said Das mentioned that the international community recognized the humanitarian gesture of Sheikh Hasina as she gave shelter to more than one million Rohingya nationals from Myanmar in Bangladesh.

Das said both countries had the scope to open new windows for cooperation.

She termed Bangladesh one of the important countries and development partners of India.

Referring to the activation of the Bangladesh-India Joint Commission, the Indian envoy told the prime minister: "You can count on our support."

Das said the cooperation between the two neighbouring countries will continue on a win-win situation.

She also added that enhancing regional connectivity will bring economic prosperity for all the countries of the region.

She conveyed good wishes of the India president and prime minister to Sheikh Hasina.

The Indian high commissioner said she was posted in Bangladesh earlier and now she is amazed after witnessing the massive development and changes of the country.

"You have achieved unparalleled success on women empowerment,” she told Hasina.

Welcoming Riva Ganguly Das to Bangladesh, the prime minister said she was glad to receive her and assured cooperation of her government for discharging her duties in the country.

She said the Indian government and its people were always supportive to Bangladesh like they were back in 1971.

Sheikh Hasina also mentioned the support from all political parties in India in settling the issue of land boundary with Bangladesh.

"All the parties cutting across their differences lent their support on the issue like they did in 1971, and this will remain as an example," she said.

Hasina again clearly said that any insurgent group will not be allowed to use the soil of Bangladesh against its neighbouring countries.
