Although teachers were sent to schools in Maungdaw, there are few pupils attending.

“Schools have re-opened but teachers and medics fear being attacked. There are few pupils because they are scared of passing through Muslim villages. They dare not leave their villages,” Aung Win, the chairperson of an investigation team on the October 9 Maungdaw attack.

“Schools are closed because of a lack of security in villages. Some teachers go back to the city since there are no children and they feel unsafe,” villager Aung Win said.

"Only schools which have teachers who live in village can re-open. Teachers who come from other towns do not dare to live in villages since the villagers are afraid,” said a teacher in Maungdaw.

Teachers' housing in southern Maungdaw was reportedly set on fire on November 7 and November 17.
