The information committee for State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi's office has announced that a Buthidaung Township resident was arrested for sending allegedly "false information" about Rakhine State to a Rohingya Muslim group on Viber, an online messaging application.

None of the authorities' claims could be independently verified.

The group is also alleged to have extremist members in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, India and others.

The statement said that Ramouk Tullar, 21, was arrested at his home on November 17 in Kyaukphyutharthaykan village for sending "false" news saying the "security forces tortured and killed Muslims in Buthidaung". Such reports about Rakhine State have dominated the international media. Media and aid groups are refused access to the north of the state so reports are difficult to verify.

Police and investigators said they raided his home upon a tip-off.

When inspected, a mobile phone owned by Ramouk Tullar was allegedly linked to a Viber the "Rohingya Muslim Group" and an audio file recorded in the Bengali language. "Asking for help as policemen and soldiers joined hands in killing 'Bengalis' in Buthidaung Township", according to the statement, which used the contentious term for the state's Muslim community.

Ramouk Tullar allegedly said that another Kyaukphyutharthaykan villager named Mawlawi Moudshar returned from Bangladesh around two months ago to the village, and assisted other malawis, an Islamic spiritual leader, and villagers to create their own Viber accounts, and taught them to post news in the group. He reportedly said he continued helping other villagers to join the group which is alleged to have links to "international extremists".

The authorities claimed the Viber group called for attacks on the government and to help "illegal immigrants" living in the region to become citizens.

And it is also alleged to have had contact with the Rohingya Vision News Agency based in California to obtain help from "international extremists" and financial aid.
