Two Rohingya rights groups are calling on Malaysia to play a key role in protecting the community when it takes over as the Asean chair next year.

The two NGOs, the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) and Free Rohingya Coalition (FRC), called on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to pressure the Myanmar military junta and Arakan groups to stop the genocide of the community.

They also want Anwar to lead a bloc to stop the impunity enjoyed by Myanmar’s military junta and Arakan groups.

“Urgent protection is needed for the Rohingya community,” BROUK president Tun Khin said at a joint press conference here.

The ongoing conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine state has led to thousands of deaths and forced many to flee.

As of last year, there were over 2.6 million internally displaced people in the country.

While most have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh, others have sought asylum in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

Tun Khin went on to thank the Malaysian government for helping the Rohingya community.

FRC co-founder Nay San Lwin said the crisis had led to an increase in human trafficking.

“The Rohingya may enter countries illegally to escape persecution.”

The call by BROUK and FRC comes days after Doctors Without Borders, an NGO that provides humanitarian medical care, called on Malaysia to lead Asean to increase humanitarian aid for the Rohingya.

In July, Tun Khin told Bernama that as the Asean chairman, Malaysia must recognise the emergency crisis facing the Rohingya.

He also said the country must lead efforts to halt the genocide and extrajudicial killings targeting Rohingya by both sides.
