The ethnic cleansing of Myanmar’s Rohingya population has been one of the most prolonged humanitarian crises in human history, one which has led to the exodus of more than a million of the Muslim minority to seek refuge in Bangladesh where they are currently subsisting in various camps.
While aid from the international community has slowed down to a trickle over the past few years, it is good to know that renewed commitment to donations from nations such as the US, the UK, Japan, Australia, and the European Union has been established in direct partnership with the Bangladeshi government while also committing to ongoing efforts to find what they dub a sustainable solution to the crisis.
It has been made abundantly clear that the only sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis is repatriation. While the international community’s help regarding the refugees is better late than never, they would be best advised to not hide behind nebulous terms and instead channel their efforts into ensuring that the Rohingya are allowed to safely and securely return to their homeland.
We have always known that repatriation is the only solution to this crisis, the Rohingya deserve to live free in their own land just as much as the natives of any other nation, and on this front the wider international community has failed miserably. Aid and donation to help the million-plus Rohingya refugees is absolutely welcome, of that there is no doubt, but when it comes to repatriation it is disappointing to see other nations avoid calling a spade a spade and call out Myanmar for consistently failing to adopt its promised repatriation schemes.
This cannot go on any longer.
