Indonesian President Joko Widodo pledged action against traffickers, not deportation of Rohingya

After hundreds of Rohingya landed on the shores of Indonesia's Aceh province, a video was shared in social media posts that falsely claimed President Joko Widodo had called for the refugees to be expelled. The video -- which has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times -- in fact shows the president pledging to take action against human traffickers suspected to be behind the recent influx and saying temporary humanitarian aid would be given to the refugees.
The video has been viewed more than 252,000 times since being shared on TikTok here on December 14, 2023.

It begins with an image of Indonesian President Joko Widodo -- popularly known as Jokowi -- and a picture of a boat of Rohingya refugees.

Indonesian-language text overlaid on the image reads, "Expel Rohingya. This is Jokowi's response to ethnic Rohingya".

Text below the image reads: "Jokowi: Stop aid for Rohingya and expel them soon."

The 47-second video then shows clips of Jokowi making an announcement about an increasing number of Rohingya refugees entering the country, with his words transcribed underneath.

More than 1,500 refugees from the persecuted Myanmar minority have landed on the shores of Indonesia's northwestern Aceh province since mid-November 2023, in what the United Nations says is the biggest influx for eight years.

Some refugees said they fled escalating brutality in the camps in and around Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh, which hold more than one million people and where gangs regularly abduct and torture residents for ransom.

But the Rohingya have also faced rejection from locals in Aceh, and in some cases, their boats have been returned to sea.

Similar videos are also shared on TikTok here, and here, and on video-sharing platform SnackVideo here and here, racking up more than 633,000 views in total.

As of January 16, 2024, however, there have been no official reports of Jokowi calling for the Rohingya refugees to be expelled or for them to be denied humanitarian aid.
Presidential statement

A keyword search on YouTube led to similar footage of Jokowi addressing the situation that was posted by the Indonesian Presidential Secretariat channel here on December 8, 2023 (archived link).

The video is titled, "LIVE: President Jokowi's press statement about Rohingya refugees in Indonesia, Merdeka Palace, December 8, 2023".

The clips used in the false post correspond to the footage seen between the 1:18 mark and 2:10 mark.

In this portion of the video, the president says: "I have received reports about the increasing number of Rohingya refugees entering Indonesian territory, especially in Aceh province.

"There are strong suspicions that a criminal human trafficking network is involved in the arrival of these refugees. The Indonesian government will take firm action against human-trafficking perpetrators. And temporary humanitarian assistance will be provided to refugees, while prioritising the interests of local communities."

Not shown in the falsely shared video, but included in the president's full statement is the concluding line: "The Indonesian government will continue to coordinate with international organisations to deal with the problem."
Jokowi's full statement was also posted on the government's website (archived link).

AFP has previously debunked false information surrounding Rohingya refugees in Indonesia here, here and here.
