Several Rohingya organisations and prominent activists have come together and floated a new platform called the Arakan Rohingya National Alliance.

The alliance brings together Rohingya leaders residing in different countries to achieve the rights of self-determination of the Rohingya people within the federal union of Myanmar, according to a press release on Monday.

The leadership called for greater unity among Rohingyas and said that Rohingya were not secessionists but would want to be a part of the future Federal Democratic Union of Myanmar.

They expressed their desire to cooperate with all stakeholders inside Myanmar, the press release said, adding that they were committed to upholding ‘peaceful coexistence’ on the agreed upon union principle of ‘unity in diversity’.

Rohingya leaders expressed gratitude towards the people and the government of Bangladesh for sheltering and taking care of more than a million Rohingya refugees, and condemned the killing of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence officer, Squadron Leader Rizwan Rushdee, by criminal drug dealers on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border on November 14.

Bangladeshi security experts, including retired lieutenant general Md Mahfuzur Rahman, retired brigadier general M Sakhawat Hossain, and Dhaka University’s former professor CR Abrar, among others, attended a virtual programme chaired by Rohingya leader and newly-formed alliance chairman Nurul Islam.

Bangladeshi experts expressed their optimism that the new Rohingya alliance would be able to stand beside their community and solve the crisis before it got out of control.
