Bangladesh launches a campaign of raids in the Rohingya refugee camps against the elements "criminal"

Elite Bangladesh police forces have launched a crackdown on criminals and suspected insurgents in Rohingya refugee camps, following an upsurge in attacks on camp officials, police officials said Sunday.

The “armed police battalion” in charge of security in 34 camps housing about one million Rohingya refugees said it had arrested at least 56 people since Friday night.

About 740,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh to escape a military campaign against them in Myanmar in 2017, joining more than 200,000 Rohingya who were previously in camps in Cox’s Bazar, southeastern Bangladesh.

Police said security in the camps has deteriorated sharply in recent months, with at least 15 Rohingya – more than half of whom are camp officials – killed by burning or shooting at their hands.

“We launched the “uprooting operation” on Friday and arrested 56 Rohingya, including 24 people involved in the killing of 7 camp leaders this month,” Farouk Ahmed, a spokesman for the Armed Police Brigade, told AFP.

“They are terrorists, we will continue the campaign and eliminate the terrorists who violate the security and peace in the camps,” he added.

The Bangladeshi security forces refer to the rebel groups active in the camps as terrorists.

A senior police officer said the Arakan Rohingya Solidarity Army, a rebel group fighting the Myanmar army in the restive western state of Rakhine, was behind most of the killings.

“They are responsible for the deaths of 7 camp leaders,” he added, on condition of anonymity.

“Because of the conflict in Burma (Myanmar), the Arakan Rohingya Solidarity Army have entered the camps and created chaos. They are killing their opponents who oppose their terrorist activities,” he said.

Mahfuzul Islam, police chief of Cox’s Bazar district, said at least 20 Rohingya people had been killed in the camps this year, and 120 had been charged with the killing.

Police revealed that other rival rebel groups such as the Rohingya Solidarity Organization and Islami Mahad are also active in the camps.

A police officer indicated that some of the Rohingyas killed in recent months were members of “Islami Mahad”.

In September 2021, suspected Arakan Rohingya Solidarity Army men killed the leader of a Rohingya rights group in front of his office.

Solidarity Army was also held responsible for killing 6 teachers and students at an Islamic institute controlled by “Islami Mahad” last October.
