Bhashan Char is a much better place than the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar, observed the UN delegation that visited the island recently
Bangladesh has added yet another feather to its cap with the UN lauding its efforts to address the woes of Rohingya refugees including in the Bhashan Char island in Bay of Bengal.
Bhashan Char is a much better place than the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar, observed the UN delegation that visited the island recently. "The Bangladesh government has made an important investment in Bhashan Char…," said UN Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees (Protection) Rouf Mazou.
Mazou and his colleague Gillian Teiggs, assistant high commissioner for the refugees (Operations), visited Bhasan Char on May 31 where Bangladesh Navy built a housing project for 100,000 Rohingyas. Since December last year, some 20,000 Rohingyas from Cox's Bazar were relocated to Bhashan Char.
“Following the exodus of almost millions of Rohingyas from Myanmar to Bangladesh our government took immediate measures to accommodate them in Cox's Bazar and Teknaf area. Having no alternative locations, all Rohingyas were place in this location. Subsequently considering the pressure on locals in terms of livelihood, environmental threat, security threat etc Bangladesh Govt decided to decongest this camps by relocating some of the Rohingyas to other locations. Then Bangladesh Navy built state-of-the-art facilities and accommodations in Bhashan Char with a view to ensure a dignified and sustainable temporary homestead to some of these Rohingyas who volunteer to relocate to Bhashan Char,” a top Bangladesh government source told ET.
Over the past few months these facilities and infrastructure has been visited by a good number of journalists, NGOs and Ambassadors of different Foreign Missions in Bangladesh. All of them expressed their satisfaction on the standard of these infrastructures and facilities.
Even the President of UNGA, who visited Bangladesh last week, praised Bangladesh for addressing the plight of Rohinyas. “Presently Govt has been trying its best to initiate the process of robust engagement of UN in Bhashan Char for enhancing the facilities in this island in terms of relief goods, creating sustainable livelihood options,” the above-mentioned source told ET.
A miniscule number of Rohingyas in Bhashan Char demanded during the May 31 visit that the UN engage robustly and enhance relief activities for them and tried to create confusion, a source claimed, adding this was a vested quarter which was allegedly funded to demonstrate.
