Coast guard rescues 30 Rohingyas stranded at sea

They set out from Teknaf on a fishing boat on Friday

Bangladesh Coast Guard members have rescued 30 Rohingya men, women, and children who were illegally travelling to Malaysia by sea, in Cox's Bazar’s Teknaf upazila.

They were rescued along with a fishing trawler from Bara Dale beach area of Baharchara union in Teknaf upazila at around 8am on Tuesday. Among them, 20 are women, five men and five children.

The rescued Rohingyas are: Zainub, Md Salman, Ismat Ara, Nur Kalima, Hasina, Raseda, Asma, Chhonwara, Rabeya, Ramzana, Din Khayaz, Raiju, Nur Chadeka, Mosharfa, Rafika, Nur Fatema, Rokia Begum, Toslima, Yasmin, Taslima, Md Hafsa, Arkan Bibi, Chomuda Khatun, Sumaira, Md. Jamir, Abul Foyez, Mostafa, Russell, Yunus, Raihan. They are all residents of different camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf.

Citing the rescued Rohingyas, Bangladesh Coast Guard Headquarters Media Officer Lt Commander BN Amirul Haque said that on Friday, 30 Rohingyas illegally sailed for Malaysia on a fishing boat via a broker, after going through Marine Drive Road in Bara Dale in Shaplapur Union, Teknaf Upazila.

Later on Sunday, they were captured by pirates in the deep sea and lost everything and the boat's engine broke down. The Teknaf Coast Guard then rescued them and brought them ashore, handing them over to the UNHCR.
