Amid Burma Doctor Lock Up Guterres Praised Army on Child Soldiers Shameful Drop From List of Shame

SDNY / UN GATE, April 20 – After the Burma coup regime fired its New York-based UN ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun for his speech in New York in the usually scripted UN General Assembly, the New York Times reported that the speech had been in Geneva.

Seven hours later, that remained uncorrected. Still, an official of Volkan Bozkir, who in fine Myanmar fashion refuses to name the authors of the letters and CVs of opponents to UN Sec-Gen Antonio Guterres, bragged about the session.

But the reality is, Guterres removed Burman's or Myanmar's army from the UN "list of shame" for recruiting and using child soldiers, despite more than 200 cases. Emboldened by corrupt Guterres, they are recruiting and using even more. Now a call for Guterres, trying to steal a second term, to reinstate them on the list - but from a group which seems to join Guterres in banning Inner City Press from (its) press conference.

Now this: Health workers across Myanmar have reported a rise in the arrests of their colleagues, including at least 160 since April 13, with more expected in the coming days. The Myanmar military has targeted health workers across the country, some for participating in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) which is objecting to the military coup, and others who are merely providing medical care to injured protestors and bystanders. On April 20, the military announced that all health workers who have been charged will be disbarred from medical practice and international travel and the licenses of several private health facilities were revoked for alleged ties to CDM medics. PHR has also received worrisome reports of non-medic civilians who have been arrested and charged with treason simply for possessing over-the-counter medicines and firstaid supplies. A physician in the city of Mandalay, Myanmar told PHR: “Our colleagues have been threatened and arrested throughout the day and night, even though we are not involved in politics and have been dedicated purely to medical care. Ambulances have been taken into custody along with the crews and rescue workers. Sometimes even patients are taken into custody while they are in critical condition. We cannot freely provide health care. Now the military is seeking the list of all the doctors and medical personnel in our team so that they can arrest them anytime, anywhere – even in our houses when we are with our families. The same things are going on in Yangon and in cities and towns throughout the country.”

After Guterres and his spokespeople dodged about who is Burma's ambassador -- eager to get China's support for a second term, taking the US for granted -- this from the US Mission: "Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield met virtually this afternoon with Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, Permanent Representative of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to the UN. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield commended Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun for his courageous and compassionate statement at the UN General Assembly informal meeting on Burma last week and expressed the United States’ support for the people of Burma and the restoration of the democratically-elected government."

Dujarric, while taking public money to work for the UN, says he is the spokesman for the incumbent, like part of a political campaign. We'll have more on this.
