Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday asserted that under no circumstances Bangladesh was obligated to take Rohingyas in the country.

He made the comment when a reporter asked him about the Rohingyas detained in Malaysia on Tuesday.

There have been reports that Malaysia is planning to push them to Bangladesh which has given shelter to over 1.1 million Myanmar nationals fled ethnic cleansing in the Rakhine State.

“Rohingyas are not our citizens. So under no circumstances we are obligated to take them. If found anywhere, its up to that country to do whatever they want to do,” he said.

He once again asked countries who are preaching to give Rohingyas better lives to take them from the Cox’s Bazar camp.

“We also want their better future. But we cannot do beyond our capacity. Take them from here and give better lives,” he told the Western countries.

Malaysia has detained nearly 270 Rohingya refugees whose boat had drifted offshore for nearly two months because of coronavirus lockdowns.

They fled southern Bangladesh in early April but had been unable to dock, BBC reports.

Dozens of those aboard jumped into the sea and tried to swim to land when their damaged trawler was intercepted by the Malaysian coastguard on Monday.
