KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 -- The international community must put in more effort and cooperation in pressuring the Myanmar government to tackle the Rohingya issue.
President of Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK, Tun Khin, told Bernama International News Service recently that much more must be done even as the crisis was addressed by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during the recently-concluded 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Khin pointed out that the restoration of full citizenship rights for the Rohingyas is key to a resolute solution.
“Until today, we are thankful to the international community especially the Bangladesh government which has a large-scale response to address the humanitarian needs of the refugees as well as the internally displaced people (IDPs) in the Rakhine state.
“But without putting more pressure and implementing practical, effective actions towards respective parties, more problems could occur in the nearest future where more Rohingyas could flee to neighbouring countries (in the Southeast Asian region) and affecting them.
“Thus, this is why it is important now for more countries especially from the regional bloc (like) ASEAN to add stronger actions,” he said.
Khin added that restoring full citizenship rights to the Rohingyas rather than just repatriating them would be the best way to bring all Rohingyas back to their homeland.
“Talking about repatriation and looking at the current situation in Rakhine state, how can we go back to Myanmar without safety, security and protection, and full citizenship rights guaranteed to us Even if repatriation is to take place, they are not willing to come home,” Khin said.
He noted there are approximately half a million Rohingyas still living in Myanmar without citizenship and freedom of movement, and more than 100,000 are still detained in IDP camps.
When asked how a stronger global response can aid in reducing the escalation of the Rohingya crisis, Khin opined that sanctions on the military-related companies contributing to the issue would do, besides referring the case to International Court of Justice (ICJ).
On the Rohingya crisis during UNGA recently, Dr Mahathir regretted that the UN could not help solve problems in many countries as it regarded the matter as a domestic issue of the countries concerned.
“We can preach, we can pray, we can ask them (to) please don’t do such things, but they can continue doing it because we don’t invade countries to remove such regimes,” the prime minister said.
