They were caught trying to cross over to India via Akhaura

Bangladesh Immigration Police has detained two Rohingyas in Brahmanbaria with Bangladeshi passport on their way to India.

They were held from Akhaura land port on Thursday afternoon.

The detainees are - Md Kamal, 24, and Sabbir Mollah, 22, according to the police. They have confessed to being Rohingya.

Kamal’s passport was issued from Noakhali and listed his address as Comilla, and Sabbir’s passport issued from Dhaka listed his address as Rajbari.

Immigration Police Officer Abdul Hamid said the two were trying to enter India through Akhaura land port when the police questioned them due to their suspicious behaviour.

He said although they had both India and Myanmar’s visa on their passports, they were unable to disclose their identities properly, which made the law enforcement wary of them.

However, on preliminary interrogation, they confessed to being residents of Cox’s Bazar’s Balukhali camp for Rohingya refugees. Aftewards, they were handed over to Akhaura police.

He said: “We do not know how they acquired the passports.”

Akhaura police station Officer-in-Charge OC) Rasul Ahmed Nizami said the detainees have been kept in the police station and that a case will be filed against them soon.
