Bangladesh urged the United Kingdom to send back all the criminals convicted by Bangladesh courts but were living in the UK.

‘You should send back all the criminals who have been convicted by our courts,’ foreign minister AK Abdul Monen told outgoing British high commissioner Alison Blake without mentioning the name of any convicted criminal.

While talking to reporters at his office, the foreign minister said that he had told the British ambassador that the UK should send back all the convicted criminals if they claimed that their justice system was fair and they believed in law and fairness.

‘We’ve a responsibility to enforce our verdicts,’ said the foreign minister.

Convicted Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairperson Tarique Rahman had been living in London for the last nine years.

War criminal Chowdhury Mueen Uddin, convicted for committing crimes against humanity in 1971, had also been living in the UK.

Meanwhile, Blake and Momen also discussed about the third ‘strategic dialogue’ between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom that will be held in Dhaka in April.

The outgoing British high commissioner described it as a ‘wonderful framework’ for in-depth review of bilateral relations between the two countries.

The issue came into the discussion when high commissioner Blake paid a farewell call on foreign minister Momen at the foreign ministry.

The UK and Bangladesh held their second strategic dialogue at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London on March 15, 2018 that involved a ‘fruitful exchange’ of views on political, bilateral issues, economic and development cooperation, security and defence cooperation, and exchanges on current global issues, including the Rohingya crisis.

Momen appreciated high commissioner Blake for her dedicated and hard work to further strengthen and broaden bilateral relations between the two countries.

He sought her continued support to encourage more investment by the UK companies in Bangladesh.
Referring to more than half a million British-Bangladeshis in the UK, mostly from Sylhet, he also urged the high commissioner to make the UK visa processing easier.

The British high commissioner thanked the foreign minister for all the support she received from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government, as a whole.

On the foreign minister’s reference to post-Brexit trade preferences for Bangladesh, the British high commissioner reassured that Bangladesh would continue to enjoy European Union’s Everything But Arms like trade preferences until an even better deal was worked out between the two countries, according to the foreign ministry.

The foreign minister thanked the British high commissioner for playing a pivotal role in mobilising strong UK leadership at the global level for finding a sustainable and peaceful solution to the Rohingya crisis.

High commissioner Blake also met state minister for foreign affairs M Shahriar Alam and thanked him for all the support during her tenure in Bangladesh.

They exchanged views on the current political relations, including a high number of incoming visits from the UK over past few years, Rohingya crisis, countering terrorism and the upcoming Cricket World Cup in the UK.

Foreign secretary Md Shahidul Haque hosted a farewell lunch in honour of the outgoing British high commissioner at the state guest house Padma, where senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and business leaders were present.

High commissioner Blake presented her letters of credence to president Abdul hamid on January 19, 2016.
She is scheduled to depart from the country on March 7 after the end of her tour of duty.
