Cox's Bazaar — A Rohingya refugee was robbed by policemen in Bangladesh's camps on 1 January 2019, and later arrested and detained under 'Tax Evasion' charges, according to reliable reports.
The incident happened post midnight between 31 December 2018 on 1 January 2019 as five policemen led by sub-inspector of Police, Rezaaul Karim, broke into the hut of Najmul Hoque, a Rohingya refugee at Camp No. 13, Block A, Teng Khali Camps, Ukhia area. They searched his hut accusing him of indulging in 'YaBa' drug trades and nothing illegal was found. During the search in the hut, they body-searched his wife and molested her, according to an eyewitness' statement.
During the the search, the policemen plundered '384 grams of gold ornaments' and 288 thousands Bangladesh Taka (approx US$ 3,500) in his hut found during the search.
On the following day as he was informed – by his collaborator-informer, Mohammed Ali who is also the camp in-charge of Block 13 – that Najmul Hoque was apparently trying to report to the higher authorities about the robbery, the sub-inspector arrested him under the charges of Tax Evasion. The victim was later transferred to the Cox's Bazaar detention.
"Najmul Hoque is not involved in WY (YaBa Drugs) trades at all. He was a wealthy businessman while back in Burma. After the Burmese military and Border Guard Police started killing our people and burningbour homes in 2017, he fled the country with whatever belongings he could carry with him, like all of us did.
"Mohammad Ali, the camp in-charge, who is jealous of him, informed his master, the sub-inspector of police, about his wealth. And, they altogether set up a trap to plunder his properties. After that, Najmul Hoque has been detained under the charges that he failed to pay tax to the Bangladesh government for his money and gold ornaments", said a fellow refugee in Teng Khali camps, who is aware of Najmul Hoque's case.
As per latest updates, Najmul Hoque is likely to face a long-term imprisonment.
