State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), swept power in the 2015 general elections. Amending the Constitution was one of her campaign promises. At a forum in Singapore in August, the state counselor said “amendment of the Constitution was one of the goals of our government,” reaffirming her commitment to the cause.

Myanmar’s freedom of expression has deteriorated under its new government, a new Human Rights Watch report has said.

It cited the jailing of Reuters reporters Kyaw Soe Oo and Wa Lone, who were investigating the Rohingya crisis, saying the case “shows the military’s willingness to penalise reporters who seek information the military would rather keep hidden”.

New Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has sought the US support to resolve the Rohingya crisis “amicably”.

He said he has requested the ambassador in Dhaka to make use of the Washington’s good relations with other countries to convince Myanmar to end the crisis.

“He said they would do that,” the minister said after his meeting with Ambassador Earl Miller on Thursday at his office.

As a new school year begins, more than 145,000 Rohingya refugee children are heading back to school in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

A huge effort from the humanitarian community has seen a network of around 1,600 Learning Centres constructed throughout the refugee camps, providing vital access to education for children who fled violence in Myanmar.
