Kanni Wignaraja is assistant secretary-general at the United Nations and assistant administrator and regional director for Asia-Pacific at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

It has been more than six years since the forced mass displacement of over 700,000 Rohingya from Myanmar's Rakhine state took place in August 2017. They fled state oppression and were forced to leave their homes and embrace an uncertain future. Bangladesh found itself having to deal with one of the most rapid, large-scale human displacements ever faced by a single country. The people and Government of Bangladesh rose to this extraordinary challenge with compassion and courage, and the United Nations along with the wider international community collaborated to assist the country in responding to this crisis.

The UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on Monday agreed with the government of Myanmar to extend the tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for activities in Rakhine State amid no repatriation of Rohingyas from Bangladesh.

The MoU aims at helping create a conducive environment for the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh as well as supporting recovery and resilience-based development for the benefit of all communities living in the three northern townships of Rakhine State.

"သူတို့ ပြန်လာတာစုစုပေါင်း ၂၀ဝလောက်တော့ရှိသွားပါပြီ ပြန်လာတဲ့သူတွေက ဟိုဘက်မှာနေ ရတာအ ဆင်မပြေလို့ ကိုယ့်အစီအစဉ်နဲ့ ကိုယ်ပြန်လာကြတာဖြစ်ပါတယ် ပြန်လာရင်လည်းပဲ UEHRD အစီအစဉ် အ ရ စနစ်တကျမှတ်တမ်းတင်တယ်လက်ခံတယ် သူတို့ကိုသေချာစီစစ်တယ် သေချာတော့မှ သူတို့ကိုလက် ခံ တာတွေ NVC ကတ်ထုတ်ပေးတာတွေ ဆောင်ရွက်တာဖြစ်ပါတယ်" ဟုဦးသိန်းဆွေကပြောသည်။

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Norwegian government yesterday signed an agreement in Dhaka, aimed at fostering peace and harmony in Rohingya camps and host communities in Cox’s Bazar.

Sidsel Bleken, Norwegian ambassador to Bangladesh, and Sudipto Mukerjee, resident representative, UNDP Bangladesh signed the agreement worth USD 747,306 at the UNDP office for 2019-2021 period.

Myanmar has agreed to extend a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), regarding the creation of necessary conditions for the return from Bangladesh, of hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas to their homes in Rakhine, Myanmar, multiple sources told Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

Rohingyas are an extra burden for Bangladesh in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), said a top official at Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

“Around 1.1 million Rohingya people became a burden for Bangladesh. It is one of the big challenges for Bangladesh in achieving the SDGs on time,” said Md Abul Kalam Azad, principal coordinator for SDG affairs at the PMO.
