At a regular briefing in Geneva on Friday, WFP spokesperson Hervé Verhoosel explained that it costs the food-assistance branch of the global body $16 million every month to feed almost 900,000 Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar

The World Food Programme (WFP), the food-assistance branch of the United Nations, has warned that the situation in regards to feeding hundreds of Rohingyas sheltered in Cox’s Bazar could deteriorate ‘rapidly’ if the adequate funding is not made available.

An increasingly frustrated Dhaka government and a hostile Myanmar government have pushed Rohingya refugees into a corner with nowhere to go.

It has been two years since a brutal military campaign waged by Myanmar authorities triggered an exodus of at least 700,000 Rohingya Muslims to Bangladesh — an operation that rights groups have branded “ethnic cleansing” or “genocide.”

A UN fact-finding mission has documented major abuses in Rakhine since 2016, including widespread killings and torching of villages, and said its findings warrant prosecution for war crimes and crimes against humanity in a forum such as the International Criminal Court.

Int’l communities’ inertia to blame, says UK’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on Rohingya

Inertia at the international level has removed pressure on Myanmar and its allies and enabled impunity despite the country’s military being accused of crimes against humanity and genocide, said UK’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on the rights of the Rohingya in a report published on Tuesday.

“Despite the widespread recognition that crimes, possibly amounting to crimes against humanity and genocide, were committed, the Myanmar military are yet to experience meaningful consequences either criminally or politically,” it said.

City of London U-turns over decision to strip Aung San Suu Kyi of freedom award

The City of London Corporation has U-turned on an earlier decision to strip Aung San Suu Kyi of her honorary freedom award over her failure to condemn the ongoing violence against the Rohingya people in Myanmar.

The Corporation’s freedom applications committee today decided that Suu Kyi’s honorary freedom – the highest honour the Corporation can bestow upon an individual – should be suspended rather than revoked, despite a vote from councillors earlier in the year calling for it to be removed.

The European Union agreed to fund the UN World Food Programme (WFP) with €2 million ($2.2 million) to run humanitarian activities for displaced Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar of Bangladesh, the agency said Thursday.

Three people, including two Rohingyas, have been killed in reported gunfights in Cox's Bazar and Kushtia districts.

The incidents happened early Friday.

In Cox's Bazar, two Rohingya men, suspected of being involved in the murder of Jubo League leader Omar Faruk, were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila.

The deceased were identified as Abul Karim, 24, and Nesar Ahmed alias Nesar Dacoit, 29, of Nayapara Rohingya camp.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf police station said: "Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drive at Jadimura Hill area around midnight.

The Rohingya are a people of nowhere. They shouldn’t be abandoned.

TWO YEARS ago, Myanmar’s military launched a crackdown of fire and violence against the Muslim Rohingya population of Rakhine state in the western part of the country. New York: The Bangladesh government should end restrictions on Rohingya refugees’ freedom of movement and access to the internet and online communications, Human Rights Watch said today. Government restrictions have intensified following a failed attempt to repatriate refugees to Myanmar, a large rally by Rohingya refugees, and the killings of a local politician and four refugees.

“Bangladesh authorities have a major challenge in dealing with such a large number of refugees, but they have made matters worse by imposing restrictions on refugee communications and freedom of movement,” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “The authorities should take a level-headed approach instead of overreacting to tensions and protests by isolating Rohingya refugees in camps.”
