Cox’s Bazar pvt university suspends ‘Rohingya girl’

Cox’s Bazar International University has suspended a girl student following media reports that she belongs to the Rohingya community. DrAbulKashem, Vice Chancellor of the university, said the authorities have decided to suspend LLB(Hons) student Rahima Akhter alias Rahi Khushi following media reports identifying her as a Rohingya girl. A three-member probe committee was formed on Saturday asking it to submit a report within seven days, the VC added, reports UNB.

We appreciate the PM stressing on the need for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to play a pivotal role in forging unity of the Muslim community and stopping the conflicts among Muslim countries, at a recent meeting with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif. We do however, believe that the OIC has a wider role to play especially when it comes to the Rohingya crisis, which Bangladesh has been forced to deal with despite having its own constraints. The influx of over a million refugees into a land already burdened with limited resources and a huge population, has taken a huge toll on Bangladesh.

In the world's largest refugee camp, the Bangladeshi government is moving to strip Rohingya of a essential lifeline: their cell phones.

Up to a million stateless Rohingya refugees are living in unsanitary and overcrowded conditions in the world’s largest refugee camp in Bangladesh, having fled persecution and violence in Myanmar over two years ago. 

Now, the Bangladeshi government wants to cut off one of their last links to the outside world.

The telecommunications minister has ordered the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), with the help of mobile phone operators, to cut off cell phone service to Cox’s Bazarfrom Sunday, citing “public safety” and “state security” as reasons for taking the action.

Local people in Buthidaung township in northern Arakan have accused that the security forces set several many houses on fire at U Yin Tha village in afternoon hours of Wednesday.

A village administrator, who wanted anonymity, informed that the army took this action after two landmines were exploded near a telephone tower at U Yin Tha village under Buthidaung township as a column of Tamadaw (Myanmar Army) was passing through.

Since the creation of Myanmar’s 1982 Citizenship Law, the Rohingya have been excluded from the country’s list of “indigenous” ethnic groups.

The rationale for this move was that the Rohingya were not a “natural,” “indigenous” ethnic group in their native northern Rakhine state, but rather that they were imported to the region under British imperial administration in the 1800s.

MYANMAR’S civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi has washed her hands of the Rohingya crisis, a UN rights investigator said today ahead of a meeting between South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in and the tarnished democracy icon.

Yanghee Lee, a university professor in Seoul who is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights to Myanmar, said Suu Kyi was “terribly misguided and misinformed” about the abuses against the stateless Muslim minority in her country.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller yesterday said Myanmar needs to take action so that Rohingyas can return to their homeland.

Myanmar must create the conditions on the ground so that all Rohingyas can return to their home in a safe, dignified manner, he said.

Two INGOs banned for ‘financing anti-repatriation campaigns’ for Rohingyas

Bangladesh has banned two international non-government organisations (INGOs) from operating in the country for “financing an anti-repatriation campaigns” at Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.

INGOs ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) and Al Markazul Islami face allegations of financing and organising an anti-repatriation rally at the Rohingya camps, said Cox’s Bazar Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Mohammad Ashraful Afsar.

They provided dresses including T-shirts during an anti-repatriation rally at Rohingya camps on Aug 25, according to the ADC.
