Malaysia’s PM talks to Anadolu Agency on bilateral ties with Turkey, global issues such as Rohingya, Uighur and Palestine

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Mahathir Bin Mohamad said on Friday that Turkey could be an alternative source of import for his country.

In an exclusive interview with Anadolu Agency in the capital Ankara during his tightly packed four-day official visit to Turkey, the veteran politician of Muslim world talked about bilateral issues along with the Rohingya crisis, the Palestinian cause and the situation of Uyghur Muslims in East Turkestan, the area otherwise known as China’s Xinjiang province.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Rohingyas should be treated as Myanmar nationals or be given a chance to form their own state, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said even though Malaysia generally does not wish to interfere with the internal affairs of other countries, it does so in this case due to the massacre or genocide that is happening in Myanmar.

“Myanmar, of course, at one time was made up of many different states. But the British decided to rule Myanmar as one state - and because of that, many of the tribes (were) included in the state of Burma.

YANGON (Reuters) - Six Myanmar nationals deported from Singapore over alleged links to an ethnic minority insurgent group were remanded in custody in Yangon on Friday, a court spokesman said, as relatives of the accused said they were being held incommunicado.

“We issued another remand this morning for them,” Min Thant, an information officer at the Western District Court in the commercial capital of Yangon, told Reuters by telephone, without giving further details.

The five men and one woman were arrested in Singapore in early July and later deported to Myanmar, where they were arrested shortly after arriving.

The Supreme Court of the Union tomorrow is going to make a decision if it accepts the appeal submitted by Dr Aye Maung and author Wai Hun Aung who have been sentenced to 20-years imprisonment, said a lawyer.

The duo had their appeal rejected in the High Court of Arakan State, so they submitted an appeal to the Supreme Court of the Union in Nay Pyi Taw on 29 May.

YANGON — Nine people subject to a police probe over fundraising for the Arakan Army in Rakhine State were remanded in custody Friday, including several recently deported from Singapore.

Among the deportees is Ko Aung Myat Kyaw, who is believed to be the brother of Brigadier General Tun Myat Naing, the chief of the AA.

In a welcome move, the U.S. Department of State issued sanctions against four senior Burmese military officials. One of those sanctioned is Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing, the man directly responsible for atrocities committed against the Rohingya, a Muslim minority group in Burma.

A high-level Myanmar government delegation will visit refugee camps in Bangladesh amid tight security this coming weekend to try and persuade Rohingya Muslims and Christian to return home, officials said Thursday.

Myint Thu, Myanmar’s foreign affairs permanent secretary, will meet 250 Christian refugees for the first time since 2017, said Mohammad Abul Kalam, Bangladesh’s refugee relief and repatriation commissioner.

Cox’s Bazar – Samuda Begum wants to ensure her community’s women are aware about their human rights and concerns especially about the issues surrounding early marriage, household violence, and physical and sexual assault, so that they can lead life as human beings with dignity and respect.

Standing on the podium, the middle-aged Samuda, a Rohingya woman living in one of the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, expressed her wish before hundreds of people from her community on Tuesday. With such courage, she has included her name in the list of Community Advocates, a group initiated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and its local partner PULSE Bangladesh.
