RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has expressed concern over the little progress made in dealing with the crisis of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar along with continuous violations of their human rights and displacement from their homeland for an unknown fate in refugee camps.

Dr. Khalid Mohammed Manzlawi, deputy permanent representative of Saudi Arabia to UN, made the remarks while addressing a session at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

There is no dearth of opinion on the Rohingya repatriation issue with political leaders, scholars, and even ordinary people all weighing in with their own views. Given the current impasse, one cannot be faulted for a pessimistic view of the ongoing diplomatic efforts by the Bangladesh government and Myanmar’s handling of the repatriation issue. Naypyidaw’s initial deal for repatriation subsequently withered in early 2018 with a profound decline in interest, followed by a security blanket in the Rakhine state. There is apparently very little confidence among the Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar in the possibility of a return anytime soon due to the ongoing monk-military-led crackdown and atrocities against the remaining 300,000 Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

(UNITED NATIONS) — The U.N. envoy for Myanmar said Monday that progress on alleviating the crisis that led more than 720,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee to neighboring Bangladesh has been slow and if there is no action it will be time to “ring the alarm bell.”

Christine Schraner-Burgener was responding to frustrated speeches and questions from many countries — from Bangladesh to Saudi Arabia to the United States — on the lack of progress in returning Rohingya nearly two years after they fled a violent crackdown by Myanmar’s military.

On the eve of the second anniversary of the August 2017 campaign of extreme violence by Myanmar security forces against Rohingya civilians in northern Rakhine state, the experiences of “Chesa” and Chit” (not their real names) recall the brutality of that campaign.

“Chesa,” a 60-year-old Rohingya woman, and “Chit,” her 20-year-old daughter, were interviewed by Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) investigators in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh last year and recounted how, in September 2017, security forces entered their village and forced Chit’s 20-year-old pregnant cousin and her husband into a field. They killed the husband immediately and then raped the cousin, after which they mutilated her breasts with a knife and killed her.

Myanmar is sending a high-level delegation soon to camps in Bangladesh to explain to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims how they can return home, Myanmar's UN ambassador said Monday.

Some 740,000 Rohingya fled a crackdown by Myanmar's military in 2017 in Rakhine state and are living in camps in Cox's Bazar. Many refugees have been traumatized, providing accounts of rape, mass killings and razing of villages.

PM will warn that leaving refugees in Bangladesh camps makes them easy targets for Islamist radical recruiters 

Amid growing concern over the prolonged, indefinite stay of over a million Rohingya refugees in Bangladeshi makeshift camps, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is flying to China Monday for a five-day official visit.

Her visit is expected to focus primarily on enlisting Beijing’s support in resolving the festering crisis by using its influence to persuade Myanmar to take its nationals back.

The passport broker managed to evade arrest

A Rohingya woman was caught by the police while attempting to obtain Bangladeshi passport with counterfeit documents.

She was apprehended at the local passport office in Munshiganj around 4pm on Sunday.

The woman, Bibija, 18, was lured by one Kamrul to the passport office. However, he fled from the office, abandoning Bibija.

Gov't committed to locating PDRM, Immigration in tackling Rohingya issue

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) — The government is committed to placing the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) together with the Immigration Department soon in resolving the issue of registration of Rohingya refugees.

They are now under the supervision of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said 173, 731 Rohingya comprising 124,753 refugees and 48,978 asylum seekers were recorded by the UNHCR up to May 31 this year.

“The government had discussed with the UNHCR to place both agencies together in the refugee status determination process...however, it has not been finalised yet " she said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The report, by former Guatemalan foreign minister and UN executive Gert Rosenthal, acknowledges that there were “systemic failures” in how the UN responded to the crisis in Myanmar.
