GENEVA, Switzerland - Intensifying clashes between the Myanmar military and armed separatists that reportedly involved a deadly helicopter bombing raid on civilians earlier this week in Rakhine state, have been condemned by the UN human rights office, OHCHR.

"The Myanmar military is again carrying out attacks against its own civilians; attacks which may constitute war crimes," spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva.

Malaysian police said Monday that 41 Muslim Rohingya men and boys have been detained in the northernmost state of Perlis. They are second group to land in the country in just over a month, and some 200 others are still believed to be at sea.

The commander-in-chief of Myanmar’s military has praised China for supporting anti-Rohingya operations in Rakhine State and for standing up against the international community.

Snr. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing thanked the Chinese government for supporting its military measures against Rohingya Muslims during a meeting with members of China’s Central Military Commission and Joint Staff Department chief in Beijing on April 10.

 “Myanmar is thankful to China as a good neighbor for its correct stance and standing against the international community over the Rakhine State issue,” Min Aung Hlaing said, according to a press release.

Helle Thorning-Schmidt, chief executive of Save the Children International, has visited the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar for the second time.

Thorning-Schmidt, who is also a former prime minister of Denmark, visited the camps on Apr 6 and 7 and expressed her concerns over the rights of children along with other issues.

Suspected Arakan Army fighters attacked the police regiment headquarters in Mrauk-U township in Rakhine State late Tuesday, and local residents said there were many fatalities.

Colonel Win Zaw Oo, head of the Tatmadaw (military) Western Regional Military Command, said on Wednesday the AA attacked police headquarters with “overwhelming force,” and the military provided the police with reinforcements.

YANGON (Reuters) - Arakan Army rebels overran a police base in Rakhine state, killing two officers and one of their wives, the Myanmar government said on Wednesday, as fresh fighting broke out in a historic Buddhist temple town popular with tourists.

The Information Ministry said around 200 insurgents stormed a police headquarters in Mrauk U before being repelled, but that they abducted four women and three children as they left.

YANGON—About 20 government soldiers were killed when the Arakan Army staged attacks on two Myanmar Army artillery bases on the outskirts of Mrauk-U in northern Rakhine State on Tuesday night, the armed ethnic group’s deputy chief claimed.

Brigadier-General Nyo Tun Aung said the AA attacked the No. 31 Police Regiment because troops from Light Infantry Division (LID) No. 22 were firing 105-mm howitzer shells almost daily from the base and another Army base in Lay Hnyin Taung about 8 km from downtown Mrauk-U.

On March 15, as reports came in about the massacre of Muslims while they prayed in Christchurch, New Zealand, I was moved to visit our local mosque in Nashua, New Hampshire and pay respects with my Muslim neighbors at Jumu’ah, or Friday Prayer. I also wanted to show my support and share my grief with my friend Mustak, a member of the congregation and a local community of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.

I asked Mustak how he felt going to his mosque following the news of the mass shooting.
