Dr Wakar Uddin is a Rohingya-American born in Maungdaw of Arakan State in Myanmar, and a professor at the Pennsylvania State University. He is the director general of the Arakan Rohingya Union, a federation of 61 Rohingya organizations worldwide. In an interview with DhakaTribune’s Syed Samiul Basher Anik, he recommends that the government continue to focus on the safe and dignified return of forcefully-displaced Rohingyas to Arakan

The foreign ministry has summoned the Myanmar ambassador in Dhaka to protest “fabricated and baseless” statement that Bangladeshis were involved in a terrorist attack on a police post at Maungdaw Township near the border.

 

Lwin Oo met Md Delwar Hossain, director general of the foreign ministry’s Southeast Asia wing, on Tuesday afternoon. The envoy was asked to explain “irresponsible and false” allegations by the officials of the General Administration Department of Myanmar implicating Bangladesh in the attack.

What a change for Salim. From living 21 years in Kuala Lumpur as a Rohingya refugee from Myanmar, he is now resettled in Utica, upper New York State – about 390km from the Big Apple.

His dream destination, and life, is taking shape.

Earlier this month, India sparked panic among its long-suffering Rohingya refugee population by deporting a family of five to their home country of Myanmar, where they will most certainly face human rights violations and imprisonment. This expulsion came on the heels of the controversially forced repatriation of seven Rohingya men last October.
