David Oliver Abel, a former brigadier general and the economics czar of Myanmar’s military regime in the 1990s, died of heart failure in Yangon on Sunday. He was 84.

Of Anglo-Burman, Indian and Jewish Catholic descent, he was one of only a few non-Buddhists in the military government. Born in Yangon, David Abel was selected to attend the Royal Military Academy, Sand Hurst, in the United Kingdom from 1953 to 1956 and graduated with a degree in economics.

Myanmar requests EU not to revoke trade preference.

Myanmar Government officials and businesses have requested the European Union (EU) to reconsider the potential move to withdraw its generalised scheme of preferences (GSP) benefit from the country fearing negative impacts on growth and population. State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has ordered a crackdown on the Arakan Army (AA), said U Zaw Htay, director general and spokesperson of the President’s Office.

“Acts that affect peace and public security go against the rule of law. The government will take counter-insurgency actions in such incidents,” U Zaw Htay told the media at the Presidential Palace on Saturday.

The BSF on Sunday said that the 31 Rohingya refugees apprehended from the 'zero line' between India and Bangladesh's border near Tripura's Rayemura were "pushed" by the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB).

On January 18, BSF troops posted at the border observed 'suspicious movement' from the Bangladesh territory. Later, the BGB made a telephone call and confirmed the activity, discovering a group of Rohingya refugees, BSF DIG Brajesh Kumar told ANI. A total of six men, nine women, and 16 children were found trying to enter into India.
