Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has underscored the urgent need for unity and concerted efforts from the international community to resolve the Rohingya crisis, in the true spirit of responsibility and burden sharing.

He urged the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy on Myanmar, Noeleen Heyzer, to enhance her engagements with Myanmar authorities as well as other stakeholders to improve the conditions in Rakhine so that the Rohingyas can return to their homes without delay.

The refugee crisis in Bangladesh, caused by the genocide in Myanmar, has been acute for many years. Hundreds of thousands of displaced people, most of them with nothing but themselves, are confined to 34 refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. They are poor, they are often hungry and malnourished, and crime and violent misery thrive among them. Most have been there for almost six years, since the 2017 expulsion of the Rohingya from their homes and villages in Rakhine State by the Myanmar military. Their problem is a long-standing one, complicated by the 2021 coup in Myanmar and the multifaceted civil war that has been fought there ever since.

The Myanmar military’s “pilot project” to repatriate about 1,000 Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh has been met with scepticism, with rights campaigners calling it a “PR campaign”.

Last week, a delegation from Myanmar visited the world’s largest refugee camp in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district – home to more than 1 million Rohingya – to interview potential candidates for their return as early as next month.

It has been nearly six years since the mass exodus of Rohingya refugees from Rakhine State; hundreds of thousands of the Rohingya had to flee their homes in the wake of the Myanmar army's brutal attempt at genocide -- with them eventually finding solace and shelter within the borders of Bangladesh.

Since then, Bangladesh has continued to display the highest levels of compassion and humanity, sheltering the now well over million Rohingya refugees, at great cost to its own resources. Nevertheless, while we have continued to do our duty, the long-term solution has always been one and one only -- the safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya refugees.

A delegation from Myanmar has returned home after verifying the information of about 500 Rohingyas who are in the process of repatriation in the refugee camps of Cox's Bazar.

The delegation left Bangladesh on a trawler through the Teknaf-Myanmar transit jetty at Jaliapara of Teknaf at around 10am on Wednesday.

The delegation comprising 17 members arrived in Bangladesh on March 15.

The delegation from the Myanmar Immigration Department returned to Myanmar on Wednesday without reaching any agreement on the Rohingya repatriation agenda.

"They returned to Myanmar via Jaliapara Jetty Ghat in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, around 10.30am on Wednesday. The Myanmar delegation has collected details of 499 Rohingyas from 149 families during their visit. They met with the enlisted Rohingyas at Teknaf Shal Port and recorded their statements," Refugee, Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC) officials said.

 Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has underscored the need for unity and concerted efforts of the international community to resolve the Rohingya crisis in all its dimensions, in the true spirit of responsibility and burden sharing.

He made the suggestion at a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary General's Special Envoy on Myanmar Noeleen Heyzer held on Tuesday at the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN in New York, according to a press release received in Dhaka on Wednesday (March 22, 2023).
