The UK government is committed to continuing its role in the UN Security Council (UNSC) to highlight the plight of the Rohingyas, says British Minister of State for South Asia and the Commonwealth at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon.

He praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for hosting over a million Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar and reassured that the UK would continue to stand alongside both the Rohingya community and the government of Bangladesh.

US To Co-Host Virtual Donor Conference For Rohingya Refugees - State Dept.

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 21st October, 2020) The United States will co-host a virtual donor conference on Thursday to support the Rohingya refugees, the US State Department announced in a release on Tuesday.

"Deputy Secretary of State Stephen E.

Biegun will co-host a virtual donor conference together with the United Kingdom, the European Union, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees on October 22, 2020," the release said.

Biegun will be joined by US Agency for International Development (USAID) Acting Administrator John Barsa, the release added.

In August, the State Department marked the third anniversary of Myanmar's military campaign that drove some 700,000 Rohingya Muslims into exile in Bangladesh with a fresh demand for accountability and a safe return of the refugees.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has failed to respond effectively to the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar thanks to a lack of leadership and the 10-member organisation’s inability to grasp the scale of the human rights abuses, a report from a group of regional lawmakers said on Tuesday.

ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights said ASEAN had been hampered by its own institutional structure, which allowed member state Myanmar the space to “set the parameters of ASEAN’s engagement”.

A rebel group in western Myanmar’s Rakhine state has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of three candidates of de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s governing party, demanding the release of detained student protesters in return for letting them go.

The governing National League for Democracy (NLD) said the three – Min Aung, Ni Ni May Myint and Chit Chit Chaw – were abducted last week while campaigning ahead of the country’s November 8 election.

Dutch FM writes Momen assuring support 

The Netherlands has reiterated its commitment to help ensure justice and accountability for the atrocities committed against Rohingyas by the Myanmar authorities.

Foreign Minister of the Netherlands Stef Blok in a letter to his Bangladesh counterpart Dr AK Abdul Momen conveyed it saying they will help to ensure justice through the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The Rohingya have been subjected to persecution, discrimination and torture for decades in Myanmar. In 2017, almost a million of them had to leave their homeland because of fierce human-rights abuses. Consequently, Bangladesh welcomed them. However, three years down the line, the Rohingya are still suffering, still not able to speak up for their rights and still marginalized.

In an unprecedented move to provide military assistance to Myanmar, India is set to hand over INS Sindhuvir, a Kilo class attack submarine, to the Myanmar Navy. 

This will be the first submarine of Myanmar military, who are accused of systematic genocide against the minority ethnic Rohingya Muslim community.

An international conference is to be held next week to call on countries worldwide to “help provide much needed funding” for supporting Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and those who have been displaced by conflict inside their home state of Rakhine in Myanmar, the U.S. State Department announced Thursday.

The virtual donor conference, co-hosted by the United States, United Kingdom, European Union and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, will take place on Oct. 22, officials said.
