Three Rohingya-led parties had hoped to field at least a dozen candidates in November's vote, according to regional watchdog Fortify Rights.

A Rohingya Muslim has been barred from standing in Myanmar's upcoming election, in a decision decried by rights groups as discriminatory and a symptom of the "ongoing genocide" against the persecuted minority.

(Reuters) - The head of a U.N. investigative body on Myanmar said Facebook has not released evidence of “serious international crimes”, despite vowing to work with investigators looking into abuses in the country, including against the Rohingya Muslim minority.

Nicholas Koumjian, head of the Independent Investigative Mechanism on Myanmar (IIMM), told Reuters the social media giant was holding material “highly relevant and probative of serious international crimes” but had not shared any during year-long talks.

He declined to give details of the material the IIMM had asked for.

Facebook has said it is cooperating with the IIMM and a representative on Tuesday declined to immediately comment further.

 China and Burma have not ratified the Rome Statute establishing the International Criminal Court. However, crimes committed against these minorities can be prosecuted if part of the facts concerns signatory countries.

Extremely serious crimes on a very large scale. While the abuses against the Syrians are finally starting to be investigated and condemned, those committed against Uyghurs in China and Rohingyas in Burma have not yet arrived at this stage. The judicial calendar is rarely in tune with the media, but this does not prevent the recent months, justice has scored points in the prosecution of the perpetrators of recent crimes against humanity, even genocide.

Japan on Wednesday pledged to provide some USD 329 million (equivalent to 35 billion yen) to Bangladesh as grant for combating coronavirus (COVID-19) in Bangladesh.

In November last year, the International Criminal Court (ICC) moved to begin the full investigation into Myanmar’s violent international crimes and other events connected to the exodus of Rohingya from western Myanmar in decades.

In August 2017, Myanmar Tatmadaw, or the military, launched the "Security Clearance Operations," which resulted in the exodus of 750,000 Rohingya from across the borders into the adjacent Bangladesh city of Teknaf.
