UN and other aid agencies are concerned that the monsoon will exacerbate an already precarious situation in the Rohingya camps where almost 860,000 refugees live in overcrowded conditions, many situated in hazardous terrain.

The monsoon, with heavy rains in the past few days, brings contamination of drinking water sources and raises increased risk of water-borne disease outbreaks in the camps and adjacent Bangladeshi communities, on top of the Covid-19 pandemic, they said.

The United Nations Human Rights Council or UNHCR has adopted a resolution urging the repatriation of the Rohingya people in Myanmar.

 

The Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to Geneva said in a media statement on Monday that the resolution titled "Human Rights Situation in Myanmar" was adopted at the current session of the assembly.

In its 43rd session, the 47-member UNHRC adopted the resolution on Monday in Geneva by a vote of 37 in favour, 2 against and 8 abstentions

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has adopted a resolution calling upon Myanmar to create conditions and to establish a plan conducive to the voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return of Rohingyas and all refugees and forcibly displaced persons.

The resolution on the situation of human rights in Myanmar also stressed the need to effectively address the root causes of human rights violations and abuses against ethnic minorities, including the Rohingyas, in the Rakhine State.

While the world’s attention is focused on COVID-19, war is brewing in the jungles of western Myanmar. The Arakan Army, or AA, was formed just a few years ago by students, workers and farmers but has learned the ruthless tactics of guerrilla warfare quickly.

Major-General Twan Mrat Naing, its commander, aspires to no less than forging a new nation.

“My personal dream,” he said, “is to see our national flag at the Olympic Games and to hear our national anthem sung.”

Israel's arms sales have reached $7.2 billion in 2019, the Israeli Defense Ministry said on Monday.
