New clinic to screen Rohingya for Covid-19 in Selayang, says Health DG

KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 — Health officials have opened a clinic to screen Rohingyas in Selayang for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The UN General Assembly on Thursday approved a resolution calling for "international cooperation" and "multilateralism" in the fight against Covid-19, in the first text to come out of the international body since the outbreak began.

The resolution, which was approved by consensus, also stresses "the need for full respect for human rights" and that "there is no place for any form of discrimination, racism and xenophobia in the response to the pandemic".

The first confirmed case in Cox’s Bazar, on March 24, is a serious concern for aid workers. 

As countries close their borders and ask their citizens to stay home to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, aid organizations warn that the impact of the virus on the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh “could be enormous.” On March 24, the first case was confirmed in the local community in Cox’s Bazar, and it is now only matter of time until the virus reaches the camps, exposing the most vulnerable.

The so-called “social distancing” many countries are practicing to prevent COVID-19 seems a cruel joke to the million-plus Rohingyas who live in the overcrowded refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. Most of them fled the Myanmar Army-led attacks in 2016 and 2017, and at present, are living in poor conditions without access to clean water or adequate sanitation, making them especially at risk of an outbreak.

Local and national NGOs, civil society groups and journalists have called upon the government to launch a wide-range of awareness campaigns on coronavirus in the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar.

They also called for lifting the restrictions on using mobile phones and internet and resume 4G facilities at the camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf.

Speakers at a virtual press conference organised by the Cox's Bazar CSO NGO Forum (CCNF) today said this, adding that the Rohingyas are more vulnerable to Covid-19 infection because about 1.1 million refugees are living in a congested environment in Ukhiya and Teknaf.

ရိုဟင်ဂျာဒုက္ခသည် ၈၀၀,၀၀၀ ခွဲလောက် ပြည့်ကျပ်နေထိုင်နေရတဲ့ ဘင်္ဂလားဒေ့ရှ်နိုင်ငံ စခန်းတွေထဲက ကျန်းမာ ရေးဌာနတွေမှာ လုပ်ကိုင်နေတဲ့ ဝန်ထမ်းတွေအတွက် COVID-19 ဆိုင်ရာသင်တန်းတွေ စပေးနေ ပြီလို့ UNHCR ရဲ့ ဒီကနေ့ရက်စွဲနဲ့ ထုတ်ပြန်ချက်မှာ ဖော်ပြထားပါတယ်။

☛ COVID-19 ကာကွယ်ရေး ရိုဟင်ဂျာစခန်းတွေ ပြင်ဆင်တဲ့ အကြောင်းလည်း ဖတ်နိုင်ပါပြီ။

ရောဂါပိုး တားဆီးကာကွယ်ရေး အရေးကြီးတဲ့ လုပ်ငန်းတွေအတွက် ကျန်းမာရေးလုပ်အားပေး ဒုက္ခသည် ၂,၀၀၀ ကျော်ဟာ လူမှုအဝန်းအဝိုင်းခေါင်းဆောင်တွေ၊ ဘာသာရေးခေါင်းဆောင်တွေနဲ့ လက်တွဲလုပ် ဆောင်နေကြတယ်လို့ UNHCR က ပြောပါတယ်။ ဗိုင်းရပ်စ်နဲ့ပတ်သက်ပြီး အသိပညာပေးတာတွေကို ရိုဟင်ဂျာ၊ ဗမာ၊ ဘင်္ဂါလီ ဘာ သာစကားသုံးမျိုးနဲ့ ရေဒီယိုကနေ ထုတ်လွှင့်တာ၊ ဗွီဒီယိုနဲ့ပြသတာ၊ ပိုစတာနဲ့ လက်ကမ်းစာစောင် ဖြန့်ဝေတာတွေ လုပ်ဆောင်နေတယ်လို့လည်း ပြောပါတယ်။

ဒါ့အပြင် အားလုံးအတွက် ဆပ်ပြာနဲ့ ရေ အလုံအလောက်ရစေဖို့နဲ့ လက်ဆေးလို့ရတဲ့နေရာတွေ ပိုပြီးချ ထား ပေးဖို့ လုပ်နေပြီလို့လည်း UNHCR ကပြောပါတယ်။ ဒုက္ခသည်တွေနဲ့ စခန်းအနီးအနားက ဒေသခံ လူထုအတွက် သီး ခြားခွဲထားရေးနဲ့ ကုသရေး ဌာနတွေဖွင့်လှစ်ဖို့ အစီအစဉ်တွေလည်း လုပ်ဆောင်နေပါတယ်။

  ဒုက္ခသည်တွေကြားမှာ ကိုရိုနာဗိုင်းရပ်စ်ပိုး ပျံ့နှံ့ကူးစက်မှုအရေအတွက် အများကြီး ရှိမနေပေမဲ့လည်း ဒုက္ခသည်တွေနဲ့ သူတို့ကို လက်ခံထားတဲ့ ဒေ သခံတွေကြားမှာ ဗိုင်းရပ်စ်ပိုးရဲ့ သက်ရောက်မှုဒဏ်ကို ခံစားရမယ့် အရေး သိပ်ကိုစိုးရိမ်မိတယ်လို့ UNHCR အကြီးအကဲ Filippo Grandi ကပြောပါတယ်။
ရိုဟင်ဂျာလို့ခေါ်ဆိုတာကို မြန်မာအစိုးရဘက်က အသိအမှတ်မပြုဘဲ ဒုက္ခ သည်တွေ ပြန်လည်လက်ခံရေး အစီအစဉ်တွေ ချမှတ်ထားပေမဲ့ အခု COVID-19 ကပ်ရောဂါဘေး ရင်ဆိုင်နေရချိန်မှာ ဒီအစီအစဉ်တွေအားလုံး ရပ်တန့်နေပါတယ်။
