The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on the genocide case against Myanmar in January is refocusing attention on the desperate situation facing the Rohingya. It is also raising questions about whether the ICJ might be an effective route for pursuing accountability, given that the case was brought by a state not directly affected by the alleged violations of international law. 

The Gambia — with the backing of the Organisation of Islamic States — instituted the litigation as a party to the Genocide Convention that Myanmar also belongs to. It did so based on Article IX of the Convention that allows disputes over its ‘interpretation, application or fulfilment’ to be referred to the ICJ.

DHAKA: No coronavirus cases have been reported among Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh despite overcrowding at their camps in Cox’s Bazar, World Health Organization (WHO) officials in Dhaka told Arab News.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl Robert Miller has laid emphasis on creating pressure on Myanmar to take back Rohingyas from Bangladesh.

"Pressure should be created on Myanmar to take back [Rohingyas]," he said when he met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban on Monday, reports UNB.

The government has rejected as “one-sided and unacceptable” a human rights report in which the US criticised Bangladesh over “lopsided” 2018 parliamentary polls.

“In fact, the world needs, and has a right, to know about the human rights situation in the United States,” Information Minister Hasan Mahmud told bdnews24.com on Friday.

Displaced community's vulnerable conditions breeding ground for infections  

Years-long ordeal and the tireless struggle for survival have made Master Abdur Rahim adept to deal with potential disasters.

He, however, is worried about what lays in store for him and nearly a million other Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The virus, which has killed nearly 5,000 people in 118 countries and territories, reached Bangladesh last week.

Although only three COVID-19 cases have so far been confirmed in the Muslim-majority South Asian nation, refugees in the southern Cox's Bazar district are distressed.

Officials putting great emphasis on prevention, as spread of infection will be difficult to contain

Health officials in Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camps are putting precautionary plans into action to prevent a potential Covid-19 outbreak, as the world faces a pandemic.

Both the government and the international agencies are putting great emphasis on placing preventive measures in the refugee camps, since it will be very difficult to deal with a situation that may arise from any infection, officials told Dhaka Tribune.

The focus on William Schabas’ history and personal views detracts from the more substantive issues at play in allegations of genocide in Myanmar.

When one of Myanmar’s defense lawyers arrived at Yangon University to give a lecture this weekend, he was greeted by half a dozen protesters criticizing Myanmar for denying accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice. It was a small turn out to be sure, but William Schabas has become a lightning rod for criticism internationally.

From the moment Schabas was announced to be joining Myanmar’s defense team, he has received an abnormal level of attention. First, a 2013 interview with Al Jazeera was circulated, where he discussed the treatment of the persecuted Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. “We’re moving into a zone where the word [genocide] can be used,” he said. These comments were used against him by those who said it proved even Myanmar’s defense team knew it was guilty of genocide against the Rohingya Muslim minority. Schabas would later insist this quote was taken out of context.
