Rohingya Boy Killed as Village Hit by Artillery Shells in Western Myanmar

SITTWE, Rakhine State—A Rohingya teenager was killed and four others were injured when several shells hit villages in Rakhine State’s Kyauktaw Township, local residents said, as heavy fighting between the Myanmar military (or Tatmadaw) and the Arakan Army (AA) continued in the area.

Artillery shells struck Taungbwe Village at around 4 a.m. on Monday, killing a 15-year-old boy and wounding two teenagers, Kalu, a relative of the boy who was killed, told The Irrawaddy.

In a historic judgement, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on 23 January ordered Myanmar to implement vital measures to protect its Rohingya population from any further atrocities. This ruling has been hailed as an “accomplishment of international justice.” This lawsuit was brought by Gambia, a small African Muslim state backed by the 57 nation Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in November at the United Nations’ highest body for disputes between states. It accused Myanmar of genocide against Rohingya in violation of a 1948 Genocide Convention.

At least 16 people drowned and dozens more were unaccounted for after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees sank off southern Bangladesh early Tuesday, officials said.

Some 130 people were packed on the fishing trawler that was trying to get across the Bay of Bengal to Malaysia, coast guard spokesman Hamidul Islam told Agence France-Presse (AFP). Seventy of them had so far been rescued.

Cox’s Bazar (AsiaNews / Agencies) - At least 14 people drowned this morning and more than 40 are missing following the sinking of a boat carrying Rohingya refugees off the southern coast of Bangladesh. About 130 people were massed on the fishing boat, which tried to cross the Gulf of Bengal to Malaysia. This was reported by the spokesman for the Bangladeshi coast guard, Hamidul Islam. So far, rescue teams have pulled 70 people to safety.

The Saudi government is mounting pressure on Bangladesh to take back 42,000 Rohingya who have Bangladeshi passports.

The issue also came up for discussion at the recent conference of Bangladesh ambassadors in Abu Dhabi.
Diplomatic sources of both the countries hinted that the matter may be discussed at the joint commission meeting scheduled to be held in Dhaka on 12 February.
