The United Nations’ top court announced Wednesday that it will issue a decision next week on a request to order Myanmar to halt what has been cast as a genocidal campaign against the southeast Asian country’s Rohingya Muslim minority.
The West African nation of Gambia, on behalf of a large organization of Islamic nations, asked the International Court of Justice last month to take “all measures within its power to prevent all acts that amount to or contribute to the crime of genocide.”

In early December, the International Court of Justice heard arguments filed by the Gambia against Myanmar for violations of the Genocide Convention. This included a request for “provisional measures”, asking that the UN court immediately order Myanmar to cease genocidal activities and to report to it within four months.
The western camp finds itself divided over the Myanmar controversy. After India, Japan also maintains that there has been no genocide of the Rohingya people, but rather a counter-terrorist crackdown on the "Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army," also known by its former name Harakah al-Yaqin, or "Faith Movement."

When Xi Jinping travels to Myanmar on January 17, it will be the first visit by a sitting Chinese president since Jiang Zemin toured the country in December 2001.
Xi’s visit will show just how much times have changed between now and then. Jiang visited Myanmar when it was still ruled by a military junta and China was the then isolated nation’s closest ally.
Asean, bound by its charter of non-interference, has been criticised for not taking stronger action to protect the Rohingya, over 700,000 of whom had fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh following a brutal military crackdown in Rakhine state in late 2017.
