Rohingyas plan global campaign as ICJ set to start hearing on genocide case

Rohingyas across Europe have planned mass rallies and a global campaign, “Boycott Myanmar”, to globally drum up their demands for justice as the International Court of Justice (ICJ) begins its first ever hearing on the genocide case against Myanmar on December 10.

The European Rohingya Council (ERC) and Myanmar Muslim Association Netherlands (MMAN) are organising a Rohingya solidarity rally from December 10 to 12 in front of the ICJ at The Hague, Netherlands.

 UNHCR Deputy High Commissioner Kelly T. Clements today said it is difficult to say exactly when the environment will be conducive for Rohingya repatriation.

Kelly T. Clements said this while addressing a press conference at a hotel in Dhaka on the outcome of her recent visit in Cox’s Bazar.

“It is extremely difficult to say exactly when the environment will be conducive for Rohingya repatriation,” the UNHCR Deputy High Commissioner said responding to a query.

The Israeli ambassador was mistaken to have sent a “GOOD LUCK” message to Myanmar ahead of World Court hearings on accusations the state committed genocide against Rohingya Muslims, Israel’s foreign ministry said yesterday.

Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported that the ambassador to Myanmar wished authorities good luck in tweets that have since been deleted ahead of the hearings next month at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

Myanmar and its civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi are in hot water again over the country's mistreatment of minorities, specifically the persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state.

In recent weeks, three international lawsuits have been filed against Myanmar over brutal atrocities in 2016 and 2017.

On Nov. 11, The Gambia filed a 46-page application at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Myanmar of violating the 1946 Genocide Convention by committing crimes against humanity against Rohingya.

Next month, Myanmar’s government will get the first taste of what it has fought hard to prevent for more than two years: international accountability for widespread and systematic violence against its Muslim Rohingya minority.

Between December 10 and 12, Myanmar’s de facto civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, will lead this first phase of her government’s defense at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague against The Gambia’s official complaint against Myanmar for violations of the United Nations’ 1948 Genocide Convention. That complaint hinges on abuses inflicted by Myanmar security forces against the Rohingya in northern Rakhine state in 2017. Suu Kyi will not face Myanmar’s accusers alone. Myanmar has already warned that it will deploy unidentified “prominent international lawyers” to challenge The Gambia’s complaint. Myanmar has not shared what its legal strategy at The Hague will entail beyond “defending the national interest.” What’s certain is that Suu Kyi and Myanmar’s lawyers face an uphill battle in challenging the extensively documented campaign of mass murder, gang rape, and mutilation targeted at Rohingya civilians.

Bangladesh had no alternative but to allow Rohingyas in the country when they faced atrocities in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque said today.

General people had a lot of emotion when Rohingyas were killed and their houses burnt and when they ran across the border of Bangladesh for life, the secretary said while addressing a public lecture on Rohingya at Brac auditorium in Dhaka today.
