State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will lead the defence team at The Hague

The Government of Myanmar held a high-level briefing on the case filed by the Gambia against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice concerning the alleged violations of the provisions of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Genocide Convention 1948). The briefing took place this morning at the Presidential Palace.

A military spokesman said that Myanmar government and military will jointly handle the case against the country at the UN International Court of Justice (ICJ) by using a team led by State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

“The State Counsellor, in her capacity as Union Minister of Foreign Affairs, will lead a team to The Hague, Netherlands, to defend the national interests of Myanmar at the ICJ,” the Myanmar government said in a press release.

KUALA LUMPUR: The KL Summit next month must raise the issues of the oppressed Rohingyas, Kashmiris and Uyghur Muslims, urged Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisation (Mapim).

This is because the situation of the three Muslim groups are precarious needing a lasting solution as they are the victims of human rights violation, ethnic and cultural genocide, said Mapim President, Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid, today.

In Orlando von Einsiedel’s new documentary short Lost and Found a young girl named Dokana, separated from her family, waits patiently in hopes her mother will soon appear. As the hours pass the only sign of her mounting anxiety is the tears that brim in her luminous eyes.

Dokana is one of tens of thousands of children living in the world’s largest refugee camp, located in Bangladesh across the border from Myanmar. The camp is a makeshift home to the Rohingya minority who have been chased from their native Myanmar in a brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing.

Both Myanmar's military and its civilian government are behind the decision for Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to defend her country against allegations of genocide at the UN's top court, an army spokesman said Thursday.

In a shock move, State Counsellor Suu Kyi's office announced Wednesday the one-time democracy icon would travel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague to lead the defence team.

China and Russia on Wednesday separately expressed intent to make deeper engagement in implementing the bilateral agreements between Bangladesh and Myanmar for peaceful solution to the Rohingya crisis.

Chinese ambassador Li Jiming and Russian ambassador Alexander I Ignatov expressed their eagerness to this end in separate meetings with foreign minister AK Abdul Momen at the foreign ministry in Dhaka, according to diplomatic sources.

 ကုလသမဂ္ဂ၏ ထိပ်တန်းတရားရုံး၌ မြန်မာနိုင်ငံအား လူမျိုးတုံးသတ်ဖြတ်မှုဖြင့် တရားစွဲဆိုရာတွင် ဂမ်ဘီယာ နိုင်ငံအား ကူညီနေသည့် ရှေ့နေတစ်ဦးက ဘင်္ဂါလီမွတ်စလင်များအပေါ် တပ်မတော်က ရက်စက်ကြမ်း ကြုတ်မှုများ ကျူးလွန်ခဲ့မှုနှင့်ပတ်သက်၍ ခိုင်မာသည့်အထောက်အထားများ ပေါများစွာရှိသောကြောင့် ဂမ်ဘီယာနိုင်ငံ အနိုင်ရလိမ့်မည်ဟု ယုံကြည်ကြောင်း နိုဝင်ဘာ ၂၁ ရက်က ပြောကြားခဲ့သည်။
