YANGON—Responding to the UN Secretary General’s remarks on the Rohingya issue, State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said the Myanmar government will not shirk from its responsibility and reaffirmed that the country will work with friends who approach the issue in a “practical and balanced way.”
At the opening session of the 10th ASEAN-UN Summit in Bangkok on Nov. 3, UN Secretary General António Guterres said Myanmar was responsible for ensuring a conducive environment for the safe, voluntary and dignified return of Rohingya refugees currently residing in Bangladesh.

Beyond the international grandstanding in Bangkok, quite the most robust statement to emanate from the Asean summit was the UN Secretary-General’s appeal to the Myanmar government to take responsibility for the plight of 730,000 Rohingya refugees from Rakhine state. Mr Antonio Guterres has called upon the government in Naypidaw to deal with the “root causes” of their flight to Bangladesh and work towards their safe repatriation. The United Nations, represented as it was by its head, has raised awareness of the international rights of the Rohingya Muslims, who for several years have been buffeted from shore to shore in their quest for hearth and home.

I was very happy to meet with the [Thai] foreign affairs committee. I am looking forward to meeting with the chairman of the Senate and the parliament speaker. I am happy that they have a good understanding of the Rohingya issue. I know that Thailand had the same experience more than 30 years ago, when people from Myanmar took shelter in Thailand. You have been housing them for 35 years. Thailand understands what Bangladesh is facing.

Amnesty International is deeply concerned about what appears to be a series of recent extrajudicial executions of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazaar refugee camps. Since the killing on 23 August 2019, of a local Bangladeshi youth leader from the ruling political party Awami League, at least seven Rohingya refugees have been killed by Bangladesh police in alleged ‘gunfights’ in the span of just three weeks. Bangladesh authorities must respect and protect the human rights of Rohingya, including the right to freedom of peaceful assembly, expression and movement, as well as their other rights as refugees.
