Injustice, communal hatred, and racial discrimination have persisted in Myanmar because the Myanmar administration does not bother to be consistent with international law and human rights regulations. They have dictated their own terms, followed their own hacked grammar of life, and disregarded accepted norms of behaviour.

In her September 18 column Bangladesh does about-face on Rohingya, Sabria Chowdury Balland mischaracterizes Bangladesh’s handling of the Rohingya refugee crisis. Since 2017, 740,000 Rohingya refugees have fled to Bangladesh bringing the total number of refugees in the country to well over a million. Bangladesh generously gave them sanctuary and extended every public service it could to help them survive their ordeal, asking for nothing in return.

Balland cynically claims that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina undertook this sprawling effort to win praise as a humanitarian. This false assertion ignores her personal history and the history of Bangladesh.

UN expert implores Myanmar’s Suu Kyi: “open your eyes, listen, feel with your heart

GENEVA (17 September 2019) – A UN human rights expert has implored Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to ‘feel with her heart before it is too late’, saying that even if refugees wished to return they have little to go back to.

Yanghee Lee, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, told the Human Rights Council the situation in Myanmar was of extreme concern, and was not what she and others had hoped to see nearly four years after the election of the National League for Democracy.

“I would like to ask the State Counsellor if the Myanmar that exists today is what she had truly aspired to bring about throughout the decades of her relentless fight for a free and democratic Myanmar? I implore you Madame State Counsellor to open your eyes, listen, feel with your heart, and please use your moral authority, before it is too late.”

UNSC urged to refer Myanmar to International Criminal Court

The European Parliament passed a resolution yesterday, urging the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to impose a comprehensive arms embargo on Myanmar.

They also urged the UNSC to adopt targeted sanctions against those natural, and legal individuals who appear to be responsible for serious human rights violations.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said Myanmar should take the displaced Rohingyas back as they have emerged as a big burden for Bangladesh.

"Rohingyas are a big burden for Bangladesh. Local people of Cox's Bazar have to face sufferings because of them (Rohingyas)... Myanmar should take their citizens back," she said.

The prime minister said this when visiting Chair of UK All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) Anne Main-headed UK Conservative Friends of Bangladesh (CFoB) and the delegation of UK APPG on Population, Development and Reproductive Health jointly met the Prime Minister at the latter's official residence Ganobhaban in the city.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron has recorded his disappointment with Myanmar state counsellor Aung Saan Suu Kyi over the persecution of Rohingya Muslims in the country, particularly over her claim that “they are Bangladeshis”.

Cameron recalled his 2013 meeting with Suu Kyi in his memoir, ‘For The Record’, released on Thursday. The Myanmar leader was feted by western countries for her pro-democracy struggle but is now a pariah due to her not condemning or acting on the Rohingya issue.
