It’s time for us to embrace the idea that you can wear a beard, kurta or hijab, and have a Muslim name, and still be fully Burmese.

ONE OF Burma’s most prominent monks, Sitagu Sayadaw, once observed that Muslims are “guests” and Buddhists are “hosts”, and that “the guests must obey the hosts”. Similarly, I have heard Buddhists say that Muslims in Burma (a name I use in preference to Myanmar) need to respect Buddhist culture and “assimilate” into it.

Persecuted for decades, members of Myanmar’s Rohingya ethnic group are now turning up on the Balkan route for migrants and refugees trying to reach Western Europe.

“Army people were torturing my family,” Ali Mulla began his story. “That’s why I couldn’t live anymore in Myanmar.”

Mulla, 17, spoke in a refugee and migrant camp near the northern Serbian town of Kikinda, some 7,000 kilometres from the home he fled in Southeast Asia.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s comments on the Rohingya genocide has angered Myanmar, as it continued to deny crimes against the Muslim community in Rakhine state.

In an exclusive interview with Anadolu Agency last week, Mahathir had said that the Rohingya faced “massacre or genocide” and “they should either be treated as nationals, or they should be given their territory to form their own state.”

 BANGKOK, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- ASEAN foreign ministers reiterated their continued support for Myanmar’s commitment to ensure safety and security for all communities in Rakhine State as effectively as possible as well as facilitating the voluntary return of Rohingya refugees in a safe, secure and dignified manner.

In a joint Communique of the 52nd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting here, the ministers looked forward to the continued and effective dialogue between Myanmar and Bangladesh to facilitate the repatriation process of displaced persons from the Rakhine State.

The Prime Minister’s security affairs adviser, Major General (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, yesterday cautioned that if the Rohingya crisis was not resolved, it might affect many neighbouring nations in a tsunami like ripple effect.

“This crisis will not affect us only. The problem that is emerging is that we are getting into a vicious cycle and it would be very difficult to come out from it. 

 

IOM, Japan build solar-powered water supply network for 30,000 Rohingyas

Cox’s Bazar, July 31 (UNB) - One of the world’s largest humanitarian solar water systems was officially inaugurated on Wednesday by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and partner the Japan International Development Agency (JICA).

The network will provide safe, clean water to approximately 30,000 people living in the Kutupalong Mega-Camp from a deep underground well.

The Japanese foreign minister will leave for Yangon on Wednesday to talk to the Myanmar leadership over the Rohingya issue

Japan has proposed to play a role as mediator in Tokyo taking Bangladesh and Myanmar onboard to find a peaceful solution to Rohingya crisis ensuring their safe return to their place of origin in Rakhine State.

Bangladesh will consider the proposal as it is looking for the resumption of Rohingya repatriation.
