New Sanctions A Positive Step In Responding To The Rohingya Crisis

In a welcome move, the U.S. Department of State issued sanctions against four senior Burmese military officials. One of those sanctioned is Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing, the man directly responsible for atrocities committed against the Rohingya, a Muslim minority group in Burma.

While State’s action stopped short of financially sanctioning military officials, it subjects them to a travel ban and represents a positive step toward accountability.

WASHINGTON - Bangladesh wants Myanmar to repatriate the nearly 1 million Rohingya refugees who have fled genocide, and a top Bangladeshi official wants international financial sanctions to back it up.

Much of the Muslim-majority ethnic group has fled to Bangladesh after Myanmar’s latest brutal crackdown in 2017, which included mass killings, sexual assaults and arson. The military has justified its crackdown, which involved mass killings, gang rapes and widespread arson, as a way of eradicating Rohingya insurgents.

RAB arrests 13 alleges human traffickers including 2 Rohingya women

The RAB has arrested 13 members of a group allegedly engaged in trafficking people to Malaysia and the Middle East.

The arrestees include two Rohingya women.

The elite police unit arrested them on Thursday night following their drives at Hasnabad in Keraniganj Upazila and other parts of Dhaka, said RAB-10 chief Additional DIG Md Qaiyumuzzaman Khan.

Dhaka, ICC, discussing confidential MoU defining court’s work in Bangladesh
It is going to take at least three months for a chamber judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to decide on authorizing an investigation into the alleged atrocities against Rohingyas, ICC Deputy Prosecutor James Stewart said on Thursday.

If authorized, he pledged to "work independently, impartially, and objectively" in accordance with the Rome Statute, keeping away from any political influence.

• In a clip that's circulating online, a Rohingya refugee asked Trump what he planned to do about the genocide in Myanmar.
• Trump responded: "Where is that?"
• A man next to Trump said that it's next to Burma, which is incorrect. Myanmar used to be referred to as Burma.

A formerly imprisoned Rohingya activist said Wednesday that a US ban on Myanmar's top generals was a welcome first step but urged more action to support the long-targeted minority.

The State Department on Tuesday said that army chief Min Aung Hlaing, three other top officers and their families would not be allowed to visit the United States due to their roles in "ethnic cleansing" of the mostly Muslim Rohingya.
