The construction of Sittwe’s sea-port and the inland water terminal in Paletwa has been completed, the Indian embassy said in a July 9 statement in Yangon.
The sea-port and water terminal forms part of the US$484 million Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project that would link Kolkata in India to Sittwe in Rakhine State and then link Sittwe via a river route to Paletwa in Chin State and from Paletwa by road to Zorinpui in India’s northeastern state of Mizoram.

 India has handed over 250 new houses to Myanmar, built for displaced villagers in the restive northern Rakhine state. The houses are part of a deal signed between the two countries in December 2017. India has built the new houses for villagers whose homes were destroyed during clashes in the last two years. The new houses are located about 3km from the villagers’ previous homes. On top of these 250 new houses handed over to Myamar, India will next be building 750 more.

Recent reports about the United Nations’ response to Myanmar’s persecution of the Rohingya minority highlights just how deep the U.N.’s dysfunction has become. U.N. officials now openly worry that ongoing aid provision to internally displaced Rohingya civilians confined to squalid camps within Myanmar will have the unintended effect of “entrenching segregation,” effectively helping Myanmar in its efforts to isolate the Rohingya.

No Rohingyas have returned and small numbers continue to flee

Former UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday expressed his fears that the Rohingya issue would eventually be an unbearable crisis for Bangladesh.

He criticized Myanmar for its visible reluctance to take back the forcibly displaced people.

“It is not possible for Bangladesh to host such a large number of Rohingyas for long,” Ki-moon told newsmen, visiting a makeshift camp for refugees.

Brother of the military leader of the Arakan Army (Aa) among detained.  The armed group is fighting for greater autonomy in the Rakhine and Chin states.  Also known as Arakan, the territory is at the center of world attention for the Rohingya crisis.  But the clashes between Aa and government troops this year have already caused 35,000 displaced people.

Singapore (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The Singaporean authorities have arrested six citizens of Myanmar, accused of mobilizing support for armed violence against the Naypyidaw government.

The Interior Ministry of the city state said yesterday evening that the group had "organized and mobilized" members of the Burmese community in Singapore to support the Arakan Army (Aa).

The members of the armed group belong to the ethnic minority Rakhine (or arakanese) which, of Buddhist religion, constitutes about 4% of the Burmese population.

My mother was a survivor of the 1942 massacre, my father was killed in the 1977/78 crisis where many Rohingyas were locked up in a godown with thousands of others waiting to be freed when the lock would open but it never did. The Burmese [Myanmar] regime is rooted so deeply in hatred against Muslims that they will do anything to get rid of us,” said Anwar Shah Arkani, chairman, Rohingya Association of Canada.

Desperation breeds criminality
The Rohingya living in southern Bangladesh are passing their days in inhuman conditions. They are confined to the restraints of the refugee camps. They are not allowed to work. They are not allowed to learn Bangla. They are not allowed to marry Bangladeshis. And most importantly, they are not allowed to leave the confines of the camp.
