SINGAPORE: Several Myanmar nationals are to be deported from Singapore after mobilising support for "armed violence against the Myanmar government", the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Wednesday (Jul 10).

Myanmar news website The Irrawaddy named six individuals who it said were arrested in Singapore, including a relative of Arakan Army (AA) chief Tun Myat Naing.

SINGAPORE - The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has arrested a group of Myanmar nationals for using Singapore to mobilise support for armed violence against their government.

Their actions in support of the Arakan Army (AA), an armed group that has conducted violent attacks in Myanmar, are “inimical to Singapore’s security”, MHA said in a statement on Wednesday (July 10). It added that those found involved in activities of security concern will be deported.
The ministry’s statement came following reports in the Myanmar media that six leaders of the Arakan Association (Singapore) had been picked up, and that their computers and mobile phones were seized.

Myanmar authorities have found 63 Rohingya Muslims who were stranded near a beach in Rakhine State after their boat ran out of fuel. 

The vessel was carrying 29 men, 34 women and four crew members when it drifted to the shore while floundering in heavy seas on July 7.

In June 2018, the Shalbagan refugee camp in Bangladesh, home to 41,000 Rohingya—the Muslim minority group that fled genocide in Myanmar—became the first of 30 new camps to elect leaders. When the results were tallied, organizers at the United Nations Refugee Agency and The Adventist Development and Relief Agency International, which spearheaded the vote, were pleasantly surprised to learn female refugees had won half of the 12 volunteer seats. “I’ve always been interested in helping out, so when I got the chance to run, I did,” says Rehana Akhter, 35, one of the newly elected members. “This has never happened before in our society!”

YANGON: Police in strife-ridden Rakhine State in western Myanmar have detained dozens of Rohingya Muslims who were seeking to get to Malaysia by boat, state media reported on Wednesday.

The 63 members of the stateless, persecuted minority in Myanmar -- 29 men and 34 women -- and four crew members were arrested near a beach in Maungtaw, Rakhine, on Tuesday, after their boat ran out of fuel in bad weather and drifted ashore, according to the report.

The UK thanks the Deputy-High Commissioner for her statement, and pays tribute to the vital work carried out by her office.

It has been almost two years since shocking crimes, perpetrated primarily by the Tatmadaw, took place against the Rohingya in Rakhine State. The atrocities against the Rohingya and other minorites, including their targeted persecution and explusion has been ethnic cleansing on an industrial scale. Over the last six months the dire and desperate situation in Rakhine State has worsened with clashes between the Arakan Army and the Tatmadaw resulting in further civilian casualties, including the Rohingya, and an increase in internally displaced people. We call upon both sides to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue.

Tatmadaw (Myanmar Army) column reportedly set fire to the houses in AMyat Taung village of Rathidaung township and Alay Chaung Khami village of Buthidaung township in Rakhine State on Friday as they opened fire when they entered the village after the clashes, the villagers said.

A local resident from Amyat Taung village said “ The Myanmar Army marched on from mountain ranges where both sides are fighting which is about a mile from the village. The fighting took about half an hour. And they came from there and opened fire the village. The villagers fear run away. Then, they set fire the villages from every corner. We daren’t go and see and don’t know how many houses were destroyed."

DHAKA—Flash floods and monsoon rains have intensified the suffering of the hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas living in refugee camps in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar, displacing 2,700, damaging 3,400 homes and killing at least two, according to NGOs working in the area.

The Bangladesh government and local and international agencies are keeping volunteers on standby, fearing landslides in the densely populated neighborhoods.

Local authorities so far have recorded two deaths, including one child, during the ongoing monsoon rains.
