Chinese leadership assures Hasina of prompt resolution of Rohingya crisis

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid a five-day official visit to China from July 02-06 during which she attended the Summer Davos of the World Economic Forum (WEF) at Dalian.

During the visit, PM Hasina met with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang and discussed a range of issues for boosting bilateral cooperation. The protracted Rohingya crisis was highlighted in the meetings. Hasina sought a stronger role from Beijing for a safe, voluntary and speedy repatriation of over 750,000 Rohingya refugees forcibly pushed into Bangladesh since August 2017.

Dhaka and Beijing have agreed on "prompt" resolution to the Rohingya crisis during Prime Minister Hasina's meeting with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has “agreed” with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that Myanmar must take back the Rohingyas to end the refugee crisis swiftly, the foreign secretary has said.

“The two leaders agreed that this crisis can’t be left unaddressed and must be resolved fast,” Shahidul Haque told the media after the two leaders met in Beijing on Friday.

“A deal (on Rohingya repatriation) was signed two years ago and there is no disagreement on how the crisis will be resolved. They (Rohingyas) must return to their country,” he added.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returned home yesterday concluding her five-day official visit to China.

A special flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the PM and her entourage touched down at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 1:40pm.

During her visit, Hasina attended the annual meeting of World Economic Forum in Dalian on July 2. She held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang in Beijing on Friday and Saturday.

An international conference in London discussed the Rohingya crisis at length and looked at the pertinent issues that continue to plague the world’s most persecuted people, from ethnic cleansing in Myanmar to life as refugees in Bangladesh.

The two-day conference, organized by the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction at University College London, ended on Friday. It featured sessions on issues such as state-sponsored violence in Myanmar and the role of gender, religion, and ethics as well as many others.

Among the many panelists, which included professors, academics and activists, were chief guests and keynote speakers Saida Muna Tasneem, Bangladesh’s high commissioner to the U.K., Ireland, and Liberia, and Chris Sidoti, an international human rights lawyer.

Monsoon rain destroys 273 Rohingya shelters

At least 11 Rohingyas were injured and 273 shelters were destroyed during three days of continuous rain in Cox’s Bazar settlements, according to UN Refugee Agency.

More than 900,000 Rohingya refugees, who escaped persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine state since August 2017, are living in the settlements.

An estimated 350mm of rain fell in 72 hours from Monday and more downpours are expected throughout the next week, with four months of the monsoon to go.

According to preliminary reports, there have been 26 landslides, UNHCR said.

The Communist Party of China (CPC) has said it will contact the top leaders of Myanmar to amicably solve the Rohingya crisis and start the repatriation process as soon as possible.

CPC Minister for International Affairs Song Tao gave the assurance when he called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Diaoyuati State Guest House in Beijing yesterday, reports UNB.

They were caught trying to cross over to India via Akhaura

Bangladesh Immigration Police has detained two Rohingyas in Brahmanbaria with Bangladeshi passport on their way to India.

They were held from Akhaura land port on Thursday afternoon.

The detainees are - Md Kamal, 24, and Sabbir Mollah, 22, according to the police. They have confessed to being Rohingya.

Authorise probe into persecution against Rohingyas: ICC prosecutor

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) today requested its judges to authorise an investigation into crimes against humanity, namely deportation, other inhumane acts and persecution against the Rohingyas.

In her request to the judges, ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda, said the requested authorisation to investigate the situation covers the period since the 9th of October 2016 until the recent waves of violence in Rakhine State on the territory of Myanmar as well as any other crimes which are sufficiently linked to these events.

India has ratified and is a signatory to various conventions that recognise the Principle of “Non- Refoulement’, which prohibits deportation of refugees to a country where they may face threat to their lives.

The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear a PIL seeking identification and deportation of all illegal immigrants and infiltrators including Bangladesh nationals and Rohingyas.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Deepak Gupta took note of submission of lawyer and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay that his plea, which was filed in 2017, be listed for an urgent hearing.

"It would be listed for hearing on July 9," the bench, which also comprised Justice Deepak Gupta, said.

Beijing, Jul 4 (PTI) China and Bangladesh on Thursday agreed to advance their cooperation under the multi-billion dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held wide ranging talks with her Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang to further consolidate the bilateral ties and signed several agreements.

On her first visit to China after her re-election, Hasina, who was accorded a red carpet welcome, held talks with Chinese Premier Li during which a consensus was reached to step-up cooperation under the BRI, official Chinese media reported.
