Rights Groups Hit Myanmar Military Over Mounting Rakhine Deaths in Custody

Rights experts are again criticizing the Myanmar military for possible international law violations after reports that another civilian died in custody amid fighting between national forces and the Arakan Army (AA) in western Myanmar’s Rakhine and Chin states.

According to RFA’s reporting, at least 14 persons died of injuries they received while in military or police custody or detention between March and July during the ongoing armed conflict. Seven were from Rathedaung township, six were from Mrauk-U township, and one was from Kyauktaw township.

Bangladesh and China on Thursday signed nine instruments for further strengthening cooperation on power, water resources, culture and tourism sectors as well as providing 2,500 metric tonnes of rice for the displaced Rohingyas.

The instruments, including two loan deals, were signed in presence of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang after a bilateral meeting between the two leaders at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the capital of China.

Rohingya group thanks govt for assistance with refugee registration

PETALING JAYA: A Rohingya rights group has welcomed the government's plan to resolve the problem of registering Rohingya refugees by placing officers from the police and the Immigration Department in UNHCR's "Refugee Status Determination" process.

Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organization Malaysia (Merhrom) president Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani (pic) said they had long been receiving complaints from the Rohingya community that they could not register with the UNHCR despite a five-year wait.

GENEVA (Reuters) - Myanmar security forces and insurgents are committing human rights violations against civilians in restive western states that may amount to fresh war crimes, a United Nations investigator said on Tuesday.

A 2017 military crackdown drove more than 730,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee to Bangladesh. U.N. investigators have said that Myanmar’s operation included mass killings, gang rapes and widespread arson and was executed with “genocidal intent”.

Burmese security forces are committing fresh human rights violations that may amount to new allegations of war crimes, a United Nations investigator said on Tuesday.

These claims surfaced with the deployment of thousands of Burmese troops fighting ethnic rebels in Rakhine and Chin, the conflict-ridden Western states of the country.

After a 2017 military crackdown, 730,000 Rohingya Muslims fled from Western Burma, and sought refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh.

Prime minister’s international affairs adviser Gowher Rizvi today said the Rohingya crisis will put the biggest security threat to the South Asian countries in the coming days.

“The long-pending Rohingya crisis is now Bangladesh’s problem but it will be the entire world’s problem tomorrow,” he said, addressing the inaugural session of a seminar in the capital as the chief guest.

Five years ago, an op-ed in a Bangladeshi daily, Dhaka Tribune, ruffled the feathers of the powers that be in Myanmar’s capital, Nay Pyi Taw. Such was the offence taken that the Bangladeshi Ambassador was summoned for a dressing down by the Burmese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the opinion piece, now long removed from the web, journalist Zeeshan Khan had argued that the Rohingya “should have the option of forming an independent country between Bangladesh and Myanmar”.

Now, a broadly similar proposition has resurfaced in an intervention by US Congressman Brad James Sherman, in the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific.

DHAKA -- Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday left for an official visit to China and will attend the 13th Summer Davos Forum in northeast China's Dalian before that.

A special flight of national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka for Dalian on Monday, carrying the premier and her entourage members including several ministers.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has arrived in China on a five-day official visit -- her first to the Asian superpower after forming government for a third straight term.

A VVIP flight of Bangladesh Biman Airlines took off with the prime minister and her delegation from the Shahjalal International Airport at 5pm on Monday. The plane landed in Dalian’s Zhoushuizi International Airport at 12:10am local time (10:10pm Bangladesh standard time).

On the first floor of an unassuming building on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, three wall clocks are set to the times of Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Arakan, the former name for Rakhine state in west Myanmar.

It’s the hub of Rohingya Vision, a TV channel run by exiled Rohingya. Since 2012, the station has focused on the ongoing crisis in the Muslim minority’s Rakhine homelands. But in recent years the founders have increasingly turned their attention to the swelling ranks of Rohingya refugees. The newsroom now doubles as a base for a mission to unite and uplift the scattered diaspora.
