SITTWE—An urgent proposal regarding the shutdown of internet services in eight townships in Rakhine State was submitted to the state parliament on Monday.

Lawmaker U Hla Thein Aung of Minbya Township submitted the proposal urging the Union government to resume internet services in eight Rakhine townships where the Tatmadaw (or Myanmar Army) and the Arakan Army are fighting.

WASHINGTON - Myanmar and China should worry about the consequences of persecuting minorities, the United States' envoy for religious freedom, Mr Sam Brownback, has warned in an interview.

In terms of Myanmar's minority Rohingya, close to a million of whom are now in refugee camps in Bangladesh following a pogrom in 2017 by Myanmar's military, Mr Brownback said: "You're certainly hearing a lot of discussion (in Congress) about increased actions by the United States, and if this gets going...you don't know where those things will end up."

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is visiting China from July 1 on 5-day official tour. During this meeting, she will have meeting with key policymakers in Beijing, including President Xi Jinping. Meanwhile, Dhaka is indicating that, during the upcoming trip, Sheikh Hasina will raise the Rohingya refugee issue with her Chinese counterpart. Bangladesh will convey its fear of ”radicalism and uncertainty” in the region on security front to China due to the prolonged stay of Rohingyas in Bangladesh.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen today sought China's support to convince Myanmar to start taking back their nationals from Bangladesh at the earliest.

The Foreign Minister mentioned that Bangladesh is ready to send back Rohingyas who are in the verified list.

The Rohingya Muslims have faced persecution in Myanmar for decades. And yet no violence in their recent history has compared to that which the Myanmar military inflicted in August 2017. After militants from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army attacked police and army posts in northwestern Rakhine State on August 25, the military responded by killing thousands of Rohingya civilians, raping hundreds of Rohingya women and girls, and burning entire villages to the ground. In the course of a little more than three months, more than 700,000 Rohingya were forced to flee for their lives to Bangladesh. Myanmar authorities claimed they had conducted a “clearance operation” to rid the country of militants. In reality, they were fulfilling a long-standing dream of Myanmar’s Buddhist nationalists: the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya Muslims.

YANGON—Leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have reaffirmed their commitment to “a more visible and enhanced role” in supporting Myanmar in providing humanitarian assistance, facilitating the Rohingya repatriation process and promoting sustainable development in Rakhine State.

The ASEAN chairman’s statement issued on Sunday said ASEAN leaders stressed their continued support for “Myanmar’s commitment to ensure safety and security for all communities in Rakhine State as effectively as possible and facilitate the voluntary return of displaced persons in a safe, secure and dignified manner.”

GENEVA (24 June 2019) - The Myanmar Government’s shutdown of mobile data networks in nine townships could have serious implications for human rights and humanitarian monitoring in the conflict areas of Rakhine and Chin States, a UN expert warned on Monday.

“As there is no media access and serious restrictions on humanitarian organisations in the conflict-affected area, the entire region is in a blackout,” said Yanghee Lee, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar. “I fear for all civilians there, cut off and without the necessary means to communicate with people inside and outside the area.”

NAYPYITAW—The Tatmadaw (or Myanmar military) suffered two casualties in a navy tugboat attack by the Arakan Army (AA) in the creek of Set Yoe Kya, near Sittwe, in Rakhine State.

The attack is the first on a navy vessel in the state, Tatmadaw spokesperson Brigadier-General Zaw Min Tun told The Irrawaddy, adding that two died and one was injured in the attack.

No Internet in Western Myanmar until Security Situation Eases: MPT Official

NAYPYITAW—Internet services will resume in western Myanmar when stability is restored in the area, said the chief engineer of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications (MPT).

Out of concerns for security and the public interest, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, with the approval of the Union government, ordered telecom companies to shut down internet services in eight townships in Rakhine State and Chin State’s Paletwa Township under Section 77 of Telecommunications Law, MPT chief engineer U Myo Swe told The Irrawaddy. The Ministry of Transport and Communications oversees the MPT.

Cox’s Bazar (AsiaNews) – Abdur Rahaman, 12, a Rohingya refugee has lived in a camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh for more than two years. When he was home, in Myanmar, he wanted to be a doctor, but now everything has changed. “Here I cannot go to school. My parents enrolled me in a madrassa. Now I will never be a doctor."

Like Abdur, thousands of other children cannot go to regular school and are increasingly becoming "prey" to Islamic radicalism taught in 1,200 Islamic schools.

Foreign Minister tells parliament 

United Nation Security Council could not take any strong decision specially on adaptation of a resolution on Rohingya issue due to lack of consensus among permanent members, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen informed parliament today.

He also said that UN bodies and others Non-Government Organisations were not allowed to Northern Rakhine which is a big hurdle for creating a conducive situation for repatriation of Rohingyas. As a result, Rohingyas are not interested to return to their homeland, he said.
