Southeast Asian leaders held back from collectively demanding that Myanmar provide citizenship for Rohingyas even as some member nations sought more rights for the persecuted minority group.

2 ‘human traffickers’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

Two alleged human traffickers including a Rohingya youth were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early today.

The deceased were identified as Omar Faruk, 19, son of Habibullah and a resident of Kutupalang Rohingya camp and Md Rubel, 23, hailed from Teknaf.

BANGKOK, June 23 — An independent international community should monitor the repatriation of the Rohingya back to Myanmar to ensure they are not punished, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.

A new documentary provides a historical overview of the situation of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

The film ‘Exiled’, directed by veteran war reporter Shahida Tulaganova, “explores the roots of increasing violence” in Myanmar’s Rakhine State from the perspectives of Rohingya refugees, former Burmese government officials and radical Buddhist monks. Also interviewed in the film is General Khin Nyunt, the former head of Burmese Military Intelligence accused of masterminding the policy of persecution of Rohingya.

US on Rohingiya Crisis: Congress moves to slap sanctions on Myanmar military

The US House Committee on Foreign Affairs has approved a bipartisan legislation to impose sanctions on Myanmar military in response to the genocide against Rohingyas.

The bill -- The Burma United through Rigorous Military Accountability (BURMA) Act -- will be placed before the full House of Representatives for consideration, said the Committee Chairman Eliot L Engel in a statement on Thursday.
The bill, if passed by the House of Representatives and Senate, would prohibit the expansion of American military assistance to Burma until re-forms take place, and require reporting on crimes against humanity, in-cluding war crimes and genocide.

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Southeast Asian leaders met on Sunday for a second day of a summit in Bangkok, where they were expected to discuss pressing regional issues including the plight of Myanmar’s fleeing Rohingyas and the South China Sea dispute.

Leaders of the 10 countries on Saturday adopted a joint declaration against marine plastic pollution and stressed the importance of a regional trade pact first proposed by China.

The U.S. State Department released its annual report on international religious freedom on Friday and announced that it will strengthen its office that oversees international religious freedom issues.

State-sponsored discrimination against the Rohingyas stretches back decades in Myanmar

The Rohingya issue is likely to come up when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina meets with the Chinese premier during her official visit in July.

"Myanmar has great respect for China. If Beijing requests Nay Pyi Taw, then we hope the Rohingya issue will be resolved quickly," Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said at the closing ceremony of Bangladesh Taekwondo Federation Hanmadang Championship 2019 in Dhaka on Saturday.

When ASEAN organizes big meetings, the tendency for the host is to talk up a brouhaha. So it goes with the 34th ASEAN Summit under Thailand’s rotating chairmanship this year. By year’s end, several hundred ASEAN-related meetings will have taken place, highlighted by the final annual summitry in October-November that will include top leaders from China, India, Japan, Russia, and the US, among others.
